Running Win ME with Win XP home on another computer networked together
    for dsl.

Was unable to run scandisk completely. deleted cookies and temp internet files but didnt solve problem. Downloaded CDCHECK and it found:

    C:\WINDOWS\Application Data\AVG7\Log\emc.log with the error
warning;read;file size (664166) <> bytes read (664633) => file was most likely changed during processing (code: 20);C:\WINDOWS\Application Data\AVG7\Log\emc.log

    C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\DTCLOG\DTCXATM.LOG
    with the error
warning;read;file size (2560) <> bytes read (1536) => file was most likely changed during processing (code: 20);C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\DTCLOG\DTCXATM.LOG

    C:\WINDOWS\WIN386.SWP
(unable to read -- being used ) may or may not be a problem

    C:\WINDOWS\APPLOG\SYSTRAY.~~C
(unable to read -- being used ) may or may not be a problem

how can i fix this ?

    Thanks in advance.

Might be asking the obvious here, but did you try getting to safe mode? (Taping the F8 key during the boot process) ...if you can get that far, you can run scandisk, scanregw ....etc etc

    Cheers

I am sure i can get to safe mode, did the F8 thing looking actually for command prompt only but went ahead and booted normally.

I can run scandisk at the moment but it hangs up eventually making a
sound but doing nothing for a long period of time. Eventually i reboot it.
Probably dangerous action but i guess i get frustrated. So far it boots
ok but just cant resolve the file problems. Wont let me edit them or at
least not save them to correct the eof problem (that is, the discrepency between the actual file length and the reported file length). So would save mode be an advantage ?

    BTW thanks for the response

Ouch...I just went thru a similar experience, worked for several hours to set up Windows Me on a neighbor's machine, only to have the hard drive barf a couple of bad clusters...but let's not assume the worst

Safe mode will help ensure nothing running in back ground is stalling scandisk...I assume you had your virus protection running?

Anyway, Start>Run>msconfig ... advance button ..check mark beside "Enable start menu ", will get you to safe mode easily

Or ...get any bootable floppy to get you to a command prompt and run scandisk with a sector scan ...

    Hope this helps
    Cheers

If you do not have a boot floppy, go to Bootdisk, and get the OEM version for your choice of OS.
To use this file, insert a floppy into the drive, and then run the downloaded file. The boot floppy will be created for you.
