Hi and welcome to the BBS,
I was not sure what you meant by the "plug and play folder ".

In Device Manager under the System Devices heading is a listing for "Plug and Play Software Device Enumerator" (your system may have different wording). If this is the device that shows an error, you probably need to install the motherboard chipset drivers. These will be on the drivers disk that came with the computer. If you do not have the disk, or, the drivers are "pre-SP2" (2004), you should look for the drivers at the motherboard/computer manufacturers website.

Where did you find the drivers for the audio? If the audio is part of the motherboard (built-in) the drivers should be on the m/b drivers disk I mentioned. Another factor is the software that comes with the drivers. If you wish to uninstall the software (the audio control panel which probably has an icon in the Notification Tray), there should be a listing in Add or Remove Programs.

Did you install the drivers for the audio or did Windows during the installation? If you have information about the audio controller, go to the manufacturer's website and find drivers there (the original drivers disk is probably all you need), it may be the manufacturer of the motherboard.

hi matt, thanks for responding to my post. the plug and play error was in system under device manager. i had midi at that time but lost it when i removed plug and play. i have tried reloading the motherboard drivers but they are not being recognized. i tried getting an update from the motherboard manufacturer (shuttle) but their site is whacked, can't get anything useful from them. do you know of any sites that would have drivers for motherboards? walt

Walt, what is the motherboard model number (you said Shuttle is the manufacturer)? I will have a peek at the Shuttle website, some manufacturer's websites are very hard to navigate.

If you have the motherboard manual, it should have specifications that will list the chipset model. Basic chipset drivers will be available from the chipset manufacturer (some are Intel, nVidia, Via, SIS and ULI).

If I know the m/b model, I might be able to point you in the right direction.

hello again matt... ihave a via chipset on the board and i did go to their website but i didn't see any corresponding updates for it. maybe i just didn't see them, but any way here is some info of my machine; shuttle spacewalker ak31 motherboard, version unknown, chipset via vt8366a, amd athlon xp 1800+ 1.53ghz. i think my problem is a windows issue being my original error was that windows couldn't configure the audio drivers under plug and play. the last message i received in the audio files is that drivers are loaded but not started. how do i start them??? i've spent oodles of hours on the internet looking for answers, updates etc. still no luck.....even have a zip drive with all my old os settings and still can't pull what i need. it's getting close to sledge hammer time.....do you have any other ideas? walt

There is very little at the Shuttle Global website. The European website has a full set of information and downloads.
    http://eu.shuttle.com/archive/en/ak31.htm#specificatio
Version and specifications (there is information about finding the motherboard version).
    http://eu.shuttle.com/archive/en/ak31_faq.htm
    FAQs and downloads.

Get the VIA 4-in-1 Hyperion Drivers. After installing those, uninstall any listing for audio/sound in Add or Remove Programs (there may be a listing for AC97), if you have any third party audio/media players, uninstall those, you can get updated versions when the audio is working...then install the audio driver from the Shuttle website.
