CD and DVD Drive problem Win XP Pro

I think this is more likely to be a software problem rather than hardware but if I'm wrong, please re-direct.

Until recently no problems with either optical drives but now, even though they appear in explorer and My computer I either when I click on DVD drive I get "DVD drive not accessible- incorrect function" or, from a click on the CD drive, just a blank.
I thought it might have been a fault caused by "INCD" from Ahead (Nero) but this has now been removed and problem persists.
This may or may not be linked by an ongoing minor annoyance which I can live with if necessary,of "New hardware found" popup even though my Samsung printer has just had a driver re-loaded and it works perfectly.
Any guidance would be much appreciated

 

Suggest you reseat the data and power cables first; if no joy, go to control panel and open device manager (under system) and uninstall, save, reboot, and allow them to be reinstalled. If that doesn't fix them it appears that a new drive is in order. You don't need 2; a DVD writer will do both CDs and DVDs. A sarisfactory writer can be obtained for about $40 in the US.

Don't forget to reinstall InCD!

Thanks for the help Sparrow I will try as you suggest, maybe one of them is u/s in any case but I do like to have 2 in case one start playing up by itself.
A couple of years agoI made a donation to Windows BBS and rhink it is about time I did so again - How do I go about it ?
