The nic card is disappearing from a Dell Latitude d610 running XP sp2
I have uninstalled and let the nic reinstalled automatically. I flashed the BIOS and it worked for a while. But now it is doing it again, does anyone have any suggestions what I can try next?

    Thanks in advance

Where is it disappearing from? The Systray or Device Manager?

The Laptop is losing network connection to the network. When I go into Device Manager the Network card which is a Broadcom and it is not there, if I do a pc scan for changes in device manager it does not bring it back, but if I right click on Network adapters in the device manager and click scan for changes it will reappear and connect like nothing never happened. I am currently running Dell Diagnostic test on the system, but so far everything is passing.

This only happens from time to time, the last time was about 3wks ago.

    Hi,
If the card "disappears" during normal operation, I can only think that it may be a physical problem with the hardware. If it occurs when you start up or bringing it out of hibernation, I might wonder if the BIOS cannot identify the adapter. The BIOS probably uses a "quick boot" method of using settings it has saved from the previous boot. If the power runs very low it can lose the settings. I doubt it will have a separate CMOS battery like a desktop computer, so it probably holds startup settings using the system battery. You may need a new system battery (or maybe not let the charge run extremely low).

I think it may be the docking station, but I know that the docking station has it own network card and when I bring the laptop back to workstation and test it without the docking station i don't have a problem. So that leaves the dockingstation nic is going bad. Thank you for the help!!

If it seems to be a problem related to the docking station, investigate Hardware Profiles. You can configure different sets of drivers for situations just like that one. Read about hardware profiles in Help and Support.

Is it an onboard NIC ?
Check for a new driver- dell or www.driverguide.com
Try installing another nertwork card - or adding in one if you are having trouble with an onboard network card
PCI network cards are fairly easy
Older one will install native with windows xp
If you are having trouble with a PCI card - try cleaning the terminals with a rubber eraser
    Try another PCI slot
