    I need a little help creating a user.js file in NS 7.0. I must be dumber than dirt because I tried to follow these directions " Editing the preference file:

    1. Completely exit Netscape 7, including Quick Launch if used.
    2. Run Windows Explorer. Navigate to your Netscape Profile directory.
    3. If you have not already created a user.js file, right-click in your profile directory, click Next | Text Document, name the text document user.js, and hit enter. Now right-click on the user.js file and select Edit. Now you can add your preferences to the user.js file. In Windows Notepad click File | Save to save your changes and File | Exit to close Windows Notepad.
    4. Run Netscape. "
    Number 3 is where I hit a snag. Unless I am doing something wrong, I do not see NEXT | Text Document when I right click. Unless I am in the wrong place and that is very posible given my small brain. Any suggestions appreciated

    Make sure you are inside the xxxxxx.SLT folder. The xxxxx will be some combination of numbers and letters, for example, vx8wij3b.slt
    This is taken from http://techaholic.net/ns7.html#editfile
    by the way. The NEXT that is confusing you is a TYPO! It should be NEW, not Next!
    You will be asked if you are sure you want to change the extension. Say YES.
    If you don't get the choice to EDIT (you won't if you don't have an edit action set up in FileTypes for the JS file association) select Open With and choose Notepad.
    You will see a blank screen in your new user.js file. Just copy/paste the lines you want in there, one by one, each on it's own line, and hit Enter after each line is typed or pasted in. The cursor should be blinking underneath the last line you've entered (in
    front of a new blank line) when you are finished, at which point you save the file.

    I'm running Mozillla 1.0rc3 which is very similar to Netscape 7. Here is a site explaining the user.js in Mozilla: http://www.mozilla.org/start/1.0/faq/general.html#1.5
    As suggested there, make SURE you back up your prefs.js file before creating a user.js!

    You'r welcome. Good luck, and save a copy of the prefs.js file in a Backup folder, before doing anything!

    Disable download manager

    A little more help. I created the user.js file and added this line
    user_pref( "browser.downloadmanager.behavior ", 2); According to what I read this should kill the NS download mamager but it is still raising it's ugly head. Where did I go wrong?

    Did you close Netscape completely (all windows) and reopen it, before you tested the download behaviour?

    You could check in about:config to see if the setting is there. If not then doublecheck that the user.js file you just created is in the right profile and in the same folder as prefs.js?

    FWIW I found the following in one of the netscape.public.mozilla newsgroups:

    A quote from Jay Garcia:
    user_pref( "browser.downloadmanager.behavior ", x);

    Where x = a value of 0,1,2

    0 = Download Manager (new)
    1 = Download Manager (old)
    2 = No download manager GUI or progress indication

    If the value is set to " 2 " there is no indication of download progress
    or options. The file is actually downloaded and you're "on
    your own" as to the progress and finish time(s), etc

    Add this pref to your user.js file.

    That is what I have it set to. The reason I want to disable DL Manager is because it blocks DownLoad Accelarator from running. DL Accellarator is much faster for me.

    I would check by typing about:config in the location field and see if browser.downloadmanager.behavior with a value of 2 is listed - if it is, then the user.js is not the problem.

    From what I've read, the Value of "2" doesn't actually "kill" or "disable" the Netscape Download Manager, it just keeps you from seeing the progress window; in other words, Netscape's built-in download manager is still workng, but in the background...I think that you could still be able check in Tools/Download Manager and see the progress.

    In any case, I think you should look into how the Download Accelerator program is supposed to work in Netscape 7. (You might not need any user.js setting at all) ... Does the Download Accelerator program work as a browser plugin? If so, look in Help/about:plugins to see if it is enabed and for what extensions (exe? zip?)

    Thanks Alice I will check it out. I think I saw a way in Download Accelerator when you can enter a path and make it work
