Firstly, Why would win2k not offer the 'lock computer' option after ctrl alt delete?

Secondly I am setting up a number of machines in a simple network and am using a dsl connection from one and was gonna use the ICS feature rather than set up a proxy, but I dont get the 'sharing' tab under teh network properties?

I am still looking in to this so may find a answer but if anyone knows, much appreciated.

Lock Computer - not much help here I'm afraid but I could have sworn I'd seen a registry setting that would inactivate the Lock Computer option. Lots of searching and I can't find it though. May be a feature of TweakUI (which I don't use) or a policy setting. Dunno really.

ICS - do yourself a favor and get a router/switch that has NAT (LinkSys, NetGear, others) and get better internet performance while saving some headaches.

    cracked one...

The ICS option is only avalible in win2k server if DHCP is completely non existant. Should have realised this straight away! I am gonna use NAT in the server routing to solve the connection share issue. Cant justify a expense ona router when theres a software one in win2k

    Thanks though.

As far as the Lock issu am still bemused but am sure I will find the answer.

    Cheers.

Considering that a router/switch will run you well under $100 for one that will handle over 250 users and considering that software solutions on the server will have to be slower and contribute to server overhead, you might want to give that another thought or two.

Also, if you are doing the net admin, time savings from an inexpensive hardware solution should more than make up for the cost.

But if you set the server up as a router, it should certainly work.

    I totally agree, but...

for a 5 user network who think I have already spent too much of their money, I couldnt justify it.

I agree with your 'pro's' and yes it would be a simple option but sometimes company purse strings dont make it simple.

jools - sorry. When you said "I am setting up a number of machines in a simple network" I assumed the network was larger.

aggletonm - nice find. I couldn't locate that sucker anywhere.

    Hardware router.

I have a small network sitting behind a hardware router/NAT firewall - 8 machines and never more than 4 users online (machines maybe running Divx encoding...)

I found out that someone had been launching denial of services attacks - but those attacks just went to the hardware eqiv of /dev/null - the bit bucket in the sky - I did not even know about it until I received an email from my ISP with some excripts from some log files. - (They wondered if we were having a PC vrs PC war? and if I had forgot to play...)

I did not even sense a slow down in network service. Hardware is worth every penny.
