    Hi

I did a search and found this thread

    http://www.windowsbbs.com/showthread.php?t=50016&highlight=read-only

Which led in turn to a long rant on WindowsITPro. Although various workarounds were reported-on there, they only seemed to work for a few lucky people. The majority were totally baffled.

Having hit the same problem, I've also tried to follow the recommended solutions, without success. Among other problems, when I try 'attrib -r' from the command-line (as recommended in MS Article ID:326549), I get a message saying "Parameter format not correct -" even though this is the precise format given in the article. For the life of me I can't see what other format to use. It might not work anyway but at least I'd like to have tried it.

The funny thing is that no one in the BBS forum reports having the problem recently. And even the apoplectic rants in the WindowsITPro thread seem to have dried up in Feb '06.

Yet I'm getting this problem now and finding it completely insoluble - and infuriating. Can anyone please help?

The folder "read only" property is moot, Windows and applications ignore it anyway. If the files inside the folder are set to read-only then you can use edit menu > select all and then rt click > properties and set all the files to read-write.

    Thanks for the reply.

What I'm finding is that all folders in Explorer are set to 'read-only' (grayed-out), and that this can't be removed. Even where none of the files in a folder are 'read-only' Explorer refuses to copy or move any of them to any other folder, saying that they are 'read-only'.

    An impossible situation.

I have only 2 user accounts, and one of those is "Guest ". The other is myself as Administrator. I use the Welcome screen but I don't need to log on (presumably because there's only me, and I don't use a password). So I guess this means "yes ".
