One day after joining the forum l have suffered a catastrophic crash. Lack of concentration whilst watching football (soccer) and downloading Windows media player 9, let something get into the system. Everytime windows reaches GUI loading it crashes and shuts down. I can extract the cab files from the back up disk. Is there anything l can do with them? If not, can l add the hard drive to another computer running XP to retrieve some files l need? I'm grateful for any advice.

About the only time I have seen shutdowns in Windows 98 (SE) is when there was a problem with the graphics drivers.

Can you boot into Safe Mode?

Another reason for shutdown may be overheating. Clean the dust out of the case. Make certain the heatsink on the CPU is not blocked with dust, cool air can enter the case and heated air is exhausted.

You seem to want to extract files from the Windows disk. Is there any particular reason why? (Example, you get a message that a particular file is missing.)

If you can work in safe mode, that will mean you should be able to find the problem.

If it seems that the Media Player installation was the problem, uninstall it in safe mode.

    simple

attach the hard drive from the 98 computer to where the cd / dvd is on computer two
Then copy over what you want
be careful when handling the drive
you may have to set the jumpers ( little plastic cap to the left where the power cable goes on the drive)
Match it the same as the setting on the cd /dvdd
Otherwise the computer may not see the drive

    Window98SE crashes

I am facing the same problem, however it does not crash on installation of GUI but as and when it likes. Anti virus software is also installed.
    Media player is not installed.
The cooling of the processor was also checked and it appears to be allright.
Problem could not be detected in safe mode also.
I suspect that either the wrong graphics software was downloaded or not installed properly.
Can anyone suggest a site from where I can download the graphics software (and the correct software) again and reinstall it. Of course I will go over installation procedure so that it is installed properly this time. The chip has built in graphics card. (Motherboard Intel 82810type but assembled locally as Intel was not selling it's motherboards to local assemblers then).
Any suggestion or help will be acknowledged gratefully.

Yes, you can connect the Windows 98 hard disk to the Windows XP system; but, the Windows XP system must have PATA hard disk connectors. There are two types of popular hard disk data connectors, PATA (commonly known as IDE) and SATA. PATA is the older type that uses a 40-pin connector and a (usually gray) 2-inch +/- flat ribbon cable.

SATA uses a data cable that has only four contacts and is only about 3/8" wide.

If you aren't sure or you just would rather not have to set jumpers on the PATA drive, just be sure you connect the Windows 98 drive to a cable that has nothing else connected to it. Example: You have one PATA data cable that is connected to two PATA devices. Temporarily disconnect it from both devices and connect it to your Windows 98 drive.

Of course you know you must leave your XP drive connected to whatever cable it is on.

Now you're ready to boot the system and drag and drop files you want to copy.
