    Hi There,

Would be very grateful if someone could provide more ideas on troubleshooting:

I have recently purchased a PC for which I am having problems establishing a wireless connection.
I am using a USB wireless

    adapter - NETGEAR WG111v2
and the PC is a Dell Optiplex 745.

OS is winXP SP2, with Windows firewall currently disabled.

I know that the wireless adapter is ok, as it has successfully connected other machines to my wireless router.

I have checked / tried the following:

    1. Ensured that DHCP and DNS client Services are Started and running.
    2. netsh int ip reset resetlog.txt
    3. ipconfig /release followed by ipconfig /renew
    - the error message from the /renew command is:
    "Windows IP Configuration
An error occurred while renewing interface Wireless Network Connection : unable
to contact your DHCP server. Request has timed out. "

    4. I can't ping the wireless router
    5. The router management portal shows the MAC address of the USB Adapter, so there is at least connection at the lowest 2

    levels?

This is the current output of ipconfig /all (NB: PC has on-board ethernet interface, currently disabled, although i have

tried all the above with the interface enabled; results were the same).

    Windows IP Configuration
    Host Name . . . . . . . . . . . . : dulcinea
    Primary Dns Suffix . . . . . . . : Node Type . . . . . . . . . . . . : Unknown
    IP Routing Enabled. . . . . . . . : No
    WINS Proxy Enabled. . . . . . . . : No

    Ethernet adapter Wireless Network Connection:

    Connection-specific DNS Suffix . :
    Description . . . . . . . . . . . : NETGEAR WG111v2 54Mbps Wireless USB 2.0 Adapter
    Physical Address. . . . . . . . . : 00-18-4D-00-AB-64
    Dhcp Enabled. . . . . . . . . . . : Yes
    Autoconfiguration Enabled . . . . : Yes
    Autoconfiguration IP Address. . . : 169.254.120.148
    Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.0.0
    Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . :

Is there anything else that I am missing here? I am also aware that there is an XP SP2 Hotfix, but from reading it doesnt

seem applicable? (i have disabled WinXP Firewall)

Thanks in advance for any and all help

    Cheers,

How is the signal strength for your wireless card?

I know in if the signal is too weak due to whatever reason, it could not get the right IP.

What utility are you using to manage the wifi connection. If using the Netgear software then uninstall it and use the built in Windows Wireless Zero Config (the WZC service must be set to automatic and started).

    Tony,

Thanks a million, I tried your suggestion and it works!

Didn't have to uninstall the Netgear Software, however selected the Windows Zero Config option when windows was starting up. It renews the IP address automatically, now.

Thanks again, dont exactly know whats wrong with the Netgear wireless software, but i'm not going to explore any further for now.

Third party wifi connection managers usuallly always disable Wireless Zero as they use their own 80211x utility. My experience has been that XP WZC does a better job than any third party wifi software, rarely any troubles with it and is reliable.

Sort of, but that was when most all wifi was 80211b only. Third party wifi managers looked good back then.
