First may I apologise if this is in the wrong area. If the admin team move this topic please could they leave a pointer for my return :)

I recently moved broadband from ntl fixed line 1 meg to Virgin.net (uk) speeds upto 8 meg. Immediately I ran into problems. For 2 days I had green flashing light on adsl part of modem. This was fixed by virgin. Then when I got on the net I noticed it ran very slow at peak times. It either wouldnt work at all (pages timing out) or I was getting speeds at or slower than dial up speed. These problems do only arise at peek times.

I am 90 percent certain the problem lies with the internet provider (ive read many similar complaints in various forums and news articles). However my query relates to the fact that when the pages start timing out, if I turn off the pc and restart then reconnect I get a connection with speeds where I can use the net again - although still very slow.

Is it the isp or am I perhaps missing something ? I have reinstalled modem several times and replaced all filters etc.

This problem only started after change of isp.

I agree with you, "90%" is ISP's problem.

There are a lot facts affect the speed. Such as: from your home to your ISP, from your ISP to other ISP and to the web hosts. Any of them could be a bottle neck. That's why someone complains that her "broadband" connection is slower than others' "dial up" connection. The "broadband" itself is surely faster then "dial up ", but some of the connections between your home and the destination host may be busy at sometime.

Back to your question, the connection between you and your ISP has dramatically improved. But it is slow ONLY at the peak hour, obviously, at the peak hour, your ISP's "gross bandwidth" is limited.
