Hi all. I have a small problem. I stupidly opened up Windows Magnifier (in XP Pro) and it trashed my icons which naturally I had laid out just the way I liked them.

Stupidly I forgot to make a copy of that file(s).

Fortunately I imaged the entire drive and swapped it to a brand new drive that I'm now using. I know that there is a file(s) on the old drive that I can transplant to the new drive and recover my desktop. The problem is that despite my best searching I do not the name of that file. If someone could tell me the name of said file(s) and where I can find it I would appreciate it. Thanks.

    Hello Thomas,
    welcome to Windows BBS ... :) ... !

I'm just speculating but if the Icons on the Desktop work like the Favorites in Internet Explorer, the Favorites Folder have the links in alphabetical order and any user implemented sort order is stored in a registry key.

Hi Christer, thanks for your speedy reply. I think that I might have phrased my question poorly, let me try again. As I understand it, my computer has more than just a listing of icons, it has a file with their relative positions on my screen. This is the file that I'm looking for. Again thanks for your help.

Hold your clicker and drag the icons back to where you want them. As Christer pointed out, there is no "file" where their location is stored; the info is stored in the registry. Reinstalling the OS was overkill for this problem, IMHO.
