Blocking issue during attempt to upgrade from WIN98 to XP

Have an ASUS P5A, Super 7 motherboard with an AMD K6-2, 450 MHz CPU and ALI Aladdin 1541/BIOS chipset. Running WIN 98. When attempting to upgrade to XP, the process eventually halts with a Conflicting Devices msg. of "Setup has detected an incompatibility between your video card and the mainboard ". I cannot proceed with the install. I have upgraded my BIOS, upgraded my AGP driver and replaced by video board. (Was using an ELSA GLADIAC 511 GeForce 2 and replaced it with a GeForce 4 TI 4200 by VisionTek). I still get the same results. I guess the only thing left is to replace the motherboard but, if that isn't necessary I'd rather not. Anyone have a solution?
Oh yeah, have 128 meg of RAM.

 

Not enough information to tell for sure but check http://www.microsoft.com/hcl/default.asp and look for asus and motherboard. You will get a long list and from what I saw, many that were listed as OK for 2000 are not listed for XP. Not sure if they are no good with it or just not tested.

You never said how much ram ya got on that super 7. I've run WinXP on a 450AMD w/128meg ram just fine on Epox mobo. Try a generic pci vid card, anything will do. This places a plain vanilla vga driver so xp will install. After you are UP just shut down & install your other card & windows usually finds it or ask for the new drivers at this time

 

installation of "old" video card

Installed the oldest video card I still have. It is a Diamond Stealth S3 PCI. Used Standard VGA driver. Get same results. That makes three video cards now.

So again, how much ram? 128 min for xp! How big is your hard drive? If ya have enough room why not install winxp in another partition? You will then have a dual boot menu at startup courtesy of winxp. If ya don't quite know the partix just post back for help This dual boot thang will be a "CLEAN" install

 

Can't do a "clean" install. Have UPGRADE version of XP. Need WIN 98 installed first.

 

You already have win98 installed. Within the second winxp menu, click the little arrow in the rite hand corner & select "new installation ", then when SETUP ask for a previous ver of windows, point to c:\windows.

 

The Upgrade Win XP CD will do a clean install if you have a 95/98/ME/etc. CD.

All the upgrade CD wants is proof you own a previous version of Windows, so early on in the install process it'll ask for your 95/98/ME/etc. CD. Once it's verified you have one, it'll tell you to put the XP CD back in and the install will proceed.

Yep same thang as pointing to his already installed "C:\windows only not ness to remove winxp cd to show win98 cd

 

XP installed

Did as recommended. Loaded a "Clean Install" and it worked. Only annoying thing is XP loaded on my Second H/D, first partition - D:. So now I have a dual operating system boot capability whether I like it or not. I thought XP would overwrite the old (WIN98) on C drive. Also, when I execute Netscape from XP, all of my old Bookmarks are gone as well as the old contents of my Mail inbox. I have to boot WIN 98 to get access to my old bookmarks and E-mail, When Netscape is executed in XP there is no "import Bookmarks" in my File Menu so I can't transfer the bookmarks. Internet explorer does allow me to import the old Bookmarks from Netscape. Now if I could get my e-mail from my "old" Netscape mailbox I'd be fat, dumb and happy.

Ain't it great when it works When winxp asked where to install ya should have pointed to "create new partition on primary drive "
no biggy tho, yer having fun & learning too. Now open windos explorer & navigate to netscapes folder where your book marks are & copy folder & all to your new D:\documents and settings\Thomas Dow\favorites. Now ya have a subfolder under favorites containing YOUR old bookmarks
