Yep ........ DSL. And they often have different speed packages available. 512 down would be the least expensive. Generally they offer something like 768 and 1.5 MB down as well. You would have to call and see what package you're paying for to know for sure. However, that would only help with the online gaming/sound and speed of web pages loading. Just re-read your previous post and see you have problems with the sound in WMP. Assuming those are songs in the library, rather than streaming, I would look to updating the sound card drivers from the manufacturers website.

See if you can get the errored device taken care of first, then we'll go from there. ;)

Uninstalled as instructed, rebooted, new hardware wizard came up, it searched and did not find what it was looking for.

Then the task bar icon showed a message that said cannot find new hardware, your computer may not operate properly.

Yes, WMP is playing from the library.

If it helps, and If I am remembering correctly, I had this problem before which I think was caused by some sort of malware. Temerc was helping me at the time.

With my very limited knowledge (actually, I have no knowledge) I feel that things were working fine before and I don't remember downloading anything that might have changed the operation of the WMP or the gaming thing. Doesn't mean I didn't, just don't remember that I did.

I have also tried to download new software from the Intel site, but when I get there, I become very confused at what I am supposed to do. This site is obviously for users who know what they are doing (which leaves me right out of the picture) So... I haven't updated any software from Intel.

Open the device manager and double click the errored device, then select the Driver tab and Update Driver. Choose 'Install from a list or specific location' then click next. Select 'Don't search. I will choose driver to install' then click next. Click 'Have disk' and insert the driver disk, then browse to select the cd drive and click OK.

Let me know if it's successful.

Download SIW and run it. Click File>Create a log file, then save it to your desktop. Be patient ......... it puts quite a load on the system. Email that log to me please.

I'll be away for a few hours. ;)

Lets start with this.

http://downloadcenter.intel.com/fil...XP+Professional&lang=eng&strOSs=44&submit=Go!

Download and install #4, the Chipset Software Installation Utility. Be sure to check out the Read Me first.

Reboot.

While you're there, download #5, the Sigmatel* (IDT*) 92XX Driver version 5.10.5511.0
Install those after reboot.

Download #1 too, but don't do anything with it other than put it in a folder named BIOS. We'll save that as a last resort. ;)

Do the following as well.
• During boot, enter the BIOS setup by pressing F2.
• On the Power menu, disable Intel Quick Resume Technology.
• Press F10 to Save and Exit.

Check the device manager again. If still showing errors, try re-installing drivers. When you get the option to include locations, browse to and select C:\Windows\inf
I would also like for you to see if you can find the SMBus Controller in device manager. You may need to click View>Show hidden devices.

The log you sent shows the Intel(R) 82801GH (ICH7DH) LPC Interface Controller as started, but the Intel(R) 82801G (ICH7 Family) SMBus Controller not started. If you don't find an entry for the SMBus Controller, it may well be that the system is confused and thinks it is the LPC Interface Controller.

Let me know if the above doesn't correct it. We may need to get some expert hardware help to pitch in.

Thought that I should clarify which of the BIOS files to get. Click any one of the 4 download links, then get the following 2 files.

Recovery BIOS Update [NT4089P.BIO]
Express BIOS Update [NT94510J.86A.4089.EB.EXE]

After reading through the release notes for the BIOS update, I'm thinking it may be a good idea to apply the update anyway. There have been many revisions/updates to that BIOS since the version you have, suggesting there have been quite a lot of issues that needed addressed.

Appears that you don't have a floppy drive, so you will need a blank cd for the recovery file.

Symantec Eraser Control Driver

When I checked the device Manager, This driver is showing as: "This device is not present, is not working properly, or does not have all its drivers installed. (Code 24) "

Also found the SMBus controller under system devices.

Intel(r) 82801G (ICH7 Family) SMBus Controller 27-DA
"No Drivers installed for this device "

So far, I don't see any change. It seems that for the first few minutes, maybe 3-4, everything plays as usual, then, things start slowing down, it includes mouse lag ( to a point that I will move the mouse and then10-20 seconds later, the curser will move. Whatever is happening, it seems to "fill" up to a point, and then needs the time to "empty ", if you can understand this poor analagy. If I shut down the computer, then after it restarts, again everything starts fine and then slows down. (only in gaming, audio and video).

Still getting a lot of "program not responding messages" - then "End now" and it takes a lot of time to end now.

Sorry for the long wait, I was away for a couple weeks.

Thanks

Dana

Update

Hi Dave,

As instructed, downloaded all the recommendations, disabled the Intel quick resume tech, downloaded and placed in newly created BIOS file in My Documents.

When I downloaded option 5 - I don't know where it went. I couldn't install after the reboot. (Keep in mind - I have difficulty understanding most of these things)

Checked the device manager for the errors - found the Eraser Control driver issue and chose not to do anything else until I received further instruction from you except I downloaded the BIOS files and downloaded the recovery file to CD.

Thanks

Dana

Thanks. Did you install the #4, Chipset Software Installation Utility, and read the Read Me documentation? If not, please do so.

Redownload #5 and install it, or if you're pretty sure it's on your hard drive somewhere already, do a search for it. The filename is AUD_allOS_x5511_v5511_PV_IDTGUI_v005.exe Once found, just double click to install it. Reboot when done.

If still showing errors in the device manager, I recommend doing the BIOS upgrade. Instructions below, which I recommend you print out. If you have questions, post back.

Instructions for Express BIOS Updates
With the Intel Express BIOS Update utility you can update the BIOS while in the Windows
environment. The BIOS file is included in an automated update utility that combines the
functionality of the Intel® Flash Memory Update Utility and the ease-of use of Windows-based
installation wizards.
1. Save the Express BIOS update file to a temporary directory on the target PC.
2. Double-click the *.EXE file to run the Express BIOS update.
CAUTION!!! DO NOT POWER DOWN YOUR SYSTEM before the update is complete. This
update will take up to 3 minutes.

This section is only to be used if the BIOS updgrade fails and leaves the computer unbootable.

Instructions for Recovery BIOS Updates
In the unlikely event that a BIOS update is interrupted, it is possible the BIOS may be left in an
unusable state. The recovery process requires the chassis to be opened to move the onboard
BIOS Configuration Jumper.
WARNING: This process is intended to be performed by a trained technician.

Recovery with CD-ROM
Use this method if the recovery file (*.BIO) is too large to fit on a floppy disk or if the desktop
board does not include floppy drive support.
1. Copy the recovery file (*.bio) to a CD.
2. Place the CD in the CD-ROM drive of the target system.
3. Remove the BIOS Configuration Jumper. See the Technical Product Specification for
details including the location of this jumper.
4. Power the system on.
5. Wait 2-5 minutes for the update to complete.
*Other names and brands may be claimed as the property of others.
6. System will either turn off when the recovery process is completed or it will prompt you to
turn off the system.
7. Replace the BIOS Configuration Jumper.
8. Restart system.
NOTE: If the error message "CMOS/GPNV Checksum Bad…Press F1 to Run SETUP" appears
during boot after the update, press [F1] to go into the "BIOS Setup Utility ", press [F9] to load
setup defaults, and then press [F10] to save and exit.

Hi Dave

been away for a while. Come back to more issues. Thought I would give you a new Hijackthis log. Some problems right now... spybot will not load or scan, my Aliant security has corrupted files, all media and audio still not right ( although if I use the guest account everything runs perfect) including audio and media. Many many "end program" issues. when closing the internet screen, it always gets "Program not responsing ".

Can we try again please?

Thanks

Dana.

PS I have not gone any further than downloading the updates - I did not try to install any BIOS yet.

Hi Dana,

First, open Task Manager to the Processes tab, select each of the SpybotSD.exe processes and in turn click End Process. Now, please refer to my last post above (#56) and get those updates installed. I will also re-iterate, I think it would be a good idea to do the BIOS update anyway, after reading through the issues which the update addresses. We need to get all the hardware properly installed and working before proceeding with anything else (no errors in Device Manager).
