I work for a small business that runs Office 2003. One of our computers has Office 2003 Professional installed, while all the others have Office 2003 Small Business Edition.

I need to be able to import and export XML files in Excel on one of the machines that has Small Business Edition. I have two original Microsoft Office 2003 product CDs with license codes. One is an upgrade version and the other is a full version. So I have one extra 2003 Pro license not being used.

I have tried using the Add Functionality, Repair, and Install features from both 2003 Pro CDs. No matter what I do, my Excel does not change from SBE to Pro.

I could uninstall Office completely and reinstall, but am concerned that I will lose all of my Outlook settings. My PST is stored on a central file server.

Just to complicate things, I cannot seem to locate my SBE Office CDs. This week I had to evacuate my office due to the wildfires in San Diego. I threw all of my CD's in a suitcase and can't seem to locate the SBE CDs. If I had it, I would uninstall Excel SBE and then install Excel Pro.

Is there any way to upgrade to Pro without uninstalling Office completely? If I do have to uninstall, will I lose all of my Outlook settings and configuration.

Better yet, is there some DLL or file that I can copy from my Office 2003 Pro CD to my computer that will allow MS Excel to import/export XML? Hopefully this last idea is not viewed as an attempt at piracy - it is not meant to be that!

    Thank you!:)

Excel is Excel...The difference between SBS and Pro are the other apps like Power Point that are included in Pro.

    Hi Pete,

Unless I am missing something, you need to have Office Professional installed. One computer has Office Professional complete with Excel (call it PC1). The other has Office Small Business complete with Excel (call it PC2).

Both versions will allow me to import an XML file with the option "Use the XML Source task pane." My XML file has multiple database tables. Here is what happens when I try to drag one table from the XML Source to an Excel worksheet on PC1. First, a single row of data appears. Then I right click over the first cell and select "Refresh XML data." This causes all of my XML data for that table to populate the spreadsheet. This is what I want to happen.

On the otherhand, On PC1 nothing happens when I try to drag one table from the XML Source pane over to a worksheet. Furthermore, the option to "Refresh XML data" is not available. This is why I think I need to somehow have Office 2003 Pro installed on PC1.

    Steve,

You may be right in this. See my reply to Pete. When I look at About on one of my computers it says Microsoft Excel 2003 Small Business Edition SP2. When I do the same on the other PC I get Microsoft Excel 2003 Professional SP2. So maybe I just need to update Office SBE to Office Pro?

Let me first say that I use Excel very basically and have no need for XML, so my knowledge in that area is non-existant :) Just trying to help out.

However I do agree with Steve - AFAIK Excel is Excel. Check out Help > About in Excel for both your installations - on my install the Excel version is given followed by 'Part of Microsoft Office Standard Edition 2003' - screenshot.

Check the Excel version numbers for each install - incidentally I see that you have not installed MS Office SP 3.

The SBE Office may not have all of the same components installed by default as Office Pro. Run the Office setup from add-remove pgms and select to add components. And also run the setup on the comp w/ Office Pro and compare the installed components, esp the additional components such as utilities and tools.
