If you changed a setting in the BIOS/startup settings, you will need to clear the CMOS. You can look up how to do it in the motherboard manual/computer User Guide, or what should have the same result is to remove the CMOS battery for about 30 minutes.

    laptop?

If this is a laptop you need to press a (Fn) or function key and the F4 button I think. The button should have a monitor picture beside it.

If this is a PC, how did you disable the monitor?

Sounds almost like you may have put it in a resolution mode that can't be supported by your monitor, causing it to black out. When you say you were trying to take it out of default mode, what exactly are you referring to? A specific resolution or refresh rate? I may be going down the wrong path, but it may be that you simply selected something your monitor can't handle and it blacked out. Seems like I had that happen one time several years ago and initially I freaked out, thinking I had somehow toasted my monitor. I got it reset, but need to think how I did it. Seems like it was pretty easy... Hang in there. I'm sure you'll get this figured out.

What kind of monitor are we talking about: LCD or CRT?

darthmatta, thanks for responding , I;ll start from the beginning, I had to reload windows xp, because of some software problems, all was fine I thought until I couldnot get the monitor out of 800by 600 display mode(default mode) I tried to find the drivers online and downloaded them, for some reason the system would not use them though??, so after trying to change the display, I thought I was disabling the plug and play feature, but I disabled the adapter device for the monitor by mistake, so when I restarted the monitor shuts off aft the windows logo, I have tried to start in safe mode, but that seems to be having a problem too, any help would be welcome...........thanks D

If I understand correctly, it sounds like you were attempting your original change from 800x600 from within the Display Properties menu (the one you can get to by right-clicking on the desktop and has 5 tabs: Themes, desktop, screen saver, appearance, settings)? A couple more questions:

    1) Assuming the above is correct, you were unable to change from 800x600 because it was grayed-out and would not let you move the slider?

    2) Did you then go into the Settings tab and Advanced menu? In that menu there is the Adapter tab. I assume this is where you must have disabled the adapter and now you can't get it to load the basics so that you can change it back.

Okay, here's what I would try (you may have done some of these already)

    1) Get into Safe Mode from the moment you boot up. This take a little timing because you'll need to hit the F8 key during boot-up. From a cold start, push your on button and as it starts to post push your F8 button (not wildly, but in a steady rythmn in order to make sure you catch it at the right point). If things work correctly you'll then get a list of choices that you can move up and down on using your arrow keys. You can try the Last Known Good Configuration option and see if that works.

    2) If that doesn't work, try rebooting, hitting F8, and entering safe mode with networking.

    3) If that doesn't work, try shutting down, removing the video card, and then reinstalling it to see if Windows will react differently and allow a boot with basic drivers.

    4) If that doesn't work, and your motherboard happens to have on-board video capability you could remove the card, reboot with the on-board video enabled, get into Windows properly, remove any references and drivers to your other video card, then shut down, reinstall the card, and reload drivers.

Surely one of these things will work. Will just need to walk through it and try each. May take some time, but believe one will be the answer. I'll check back tomorrow to see how things went. Good luck!

A reason why you may not be able to select a resolution other than 800X600 is that the drivers for the Display Adapter have not been installed. In the first of my attachments it shows display settings from Windows control panel (Vista). Note it says the description of the monitor along with the model of the graphics card (Display Adapter) "...PnP monitor on nVidia GeForce 7900 GS ".

Windows Control Panel is NOT where I should make adjustments to the display settings, because I have the nVidia Control Panel installed (second attachment). Here you can see the model of the monitor is listed, even though I have not installed drivers for the monitor, the nVidia software can read the PnP information of the monitor. I need to adjust settings through the nVidia software. When I right-click on the bare desktop there is a selection for nVidia Control Panel (other manufacturer's display adapter control centres may be in the notification tray, if they are installed).

If you have not installed drivers for the display adapter, you may only get the option of using 800X600 resolution, but even before you install the drivers for the adapter, you should check that the chipset drivers are installed. If the system does not have an add-in graphics card/display adapter, all these drivers will be on the CD that came with the computer or at the motherboard manufacturer's website.

Another suggestion or two for the blank monitor problem. In the F8 menu at startup, try the Enable VGA Mode setting. If you have your old monitor handy, try connecting that.

Installing monitor drivers is unlikely to have any effect on setting the resolution. The problem is most likely to be that the graphics/display adapter drivers are not installed.
