I just got a new desktop computer. I have a Linskys wireless router and have another desktop and a laptop connected to it and they all work fine. I have an adapter on the new computer and it is connected to my Linksys network, however I can not get online. I get a message saying can't connect to the internet. The new computer is Vista and all the others are XP. Is there any step I missed which is causing me to be unable to connect to the internet. Thanks

Are you connecting to the router via wireless or cable?

I am connecting to the router via a wireless adapter on the new computer. My main computer which is directly plugged into the router is through cable

First, make sure the physical connection is good, for wireless, did you see the signal is ok?

Second, check your Vista system's IP address, did it get the "right" IP address? NOT start with 169.254.x.y.

If above steps are ok, do you have any firewall software installed ? like Norton or something.

My IP address is ok, 192.168.1.105. I have disabled Norton. When I check the router status its says local and internet access, but when I try to get on the internet, both through AOL and internet explorer it says I have no internet connection.

    Three things to check.

First is that your computer has a route out to the internet. That is, it knows that traffic destined for the internet needs to be passed to the router. The way to do that is to define the default gateway as the internal IP address of your router. As your address is 192.168.1.105, the router address you enter as the default gateway needs to start 192.168.1. too. Once set you should be able to ping 64.233.183.99.

Second check your DNS is set correctly. With modern routers that usually act as DNS forwarders, you need to set DNS to point at your router's IP address too. If that doesn't work, try the IP address for your ISP's DNS servers. If this is set up correctly you should be able to ping an internet resource by name. For example, ping www.google.com

Lastly make sure your router is connecting to the internet correctly. You should only need to do this if the above steps have failed. Main routers have a maintenence section that allows you to ping from the router, and you can use that to test that the router connects correctly. Also check the router status and logs for errors.

I am not able to ping the addresses you gave me. My router is set correctly because I have 2 other computers using the router and I have no trouble connecting to the internet. Could there be a problem because the new compuer is Vista and the other computers are XP?

I don't think there is any different between Vista and XP in this case.

As ReggieB said, the IP of your router's local port is start with 192.168.1, is it 192.168.1.1 ? if yes, can you ping it?

For DNS , could show us what is your ipconfig/all ?

My ipconfig for DNS is 24.29.103.10
    24.29.103.11

That might be where the problem is.

check your XP to see if the default gateway is 192.168.1.1 (for Linksys, most of them are 192.168.1.1)

If not, then ping whatever the default gateway in your XP from your Vista.

If yes, it means your Visat can's communicate with your Linksys router, can your Vista ping your XP ?

    DHCP or not?

Is the router setup as a DHCP server or are you manually adding the devices to the network? If so, try adding the router IP to the DNS server field under TCP/IP properties. Oh, and don't forget to add the IP address and default gateway, which need to be on the same subnet as router.
