I'm using IE5.5sp1 (with all the currently avaliable security patches from Windows Update) on Win98 (original).

When I try to clear the cache by opening Internet Properties by right clicking on the IE desktop shortcut and then clicking on "delete files" (with or without selecting "delete all off-line content ") I get this error message : "Windows experienced a problem when working with the control panel file C:\WINDOWS\INETCPL.CPL ". The message usually appears after a short delay from clicking on the delete files button and the cache files are not deleted.

When I open the Internet Options from the Tools Menu in IE and try to clear the cache I get a different error message :
Invalid page fault in WININET.DLL at 0177:7020484c

I extracted INETCPL.CLP and INETCPLC.DLL from the IE55sp1 setup files (IE_S1.cab) and WININET.DLL (IE_S2.cab) and replaced the existing files, but this did not fix the problem.

I have also tried the "repair" option in Add / Remove Programs MS IE5.5 and internet tools, but this did not solve the problem.

Can anyone suggest a solution ?

    Many Thanks

    Tony J

    Hi tjbuc
    Welcome to the boards!
    Perhaps try this:
Click Start, point to Programs, and then click MS-DOS Prompt.
Type deltree tempor~1, and then press ENTER. When you are prompted to confirm the deletion, press Y, and then press ENTER.
Type exit, and then press ENTER.
Click the Internet Explorer icon and the necessary folders will be re-built upon starting.

Thanks for your help Daizy. I had tried this before without success. However, this time I chose "restart in MS-DOS mode" and it worked. Problem solved! Thanks, Tony.
