The title is a bit misleading. I know.

I have only a laptop and want to know if I can plug the router into the cable away from that computer and have it resend the signal to my laptop elsewhere in the house.

    Absolutely will work.

To keep it simple you may need to plug in via wire for the setup but after that your on cruse control. ;)

Well I have never seen a laptop that didn't have a Ethernet port on it somewhere. (large phone jack)
Plug the laptop into the router with an Ethernet Patch cord to run the setup on the router. Once you have setup the router with passwords and Wireless Security and SSID then you can configure the wireless connection on the laptop and unplug the chord.

Thanks Scott. Just to be sure I understand --- After I set up the router using the laptop, can I then unplug the laptop and go elsewhere in the house and the router will send the signal to the laptop wherever it is in the house?

As a follow up to TonyT's post ....

Do you have a wireless router and does your laptop have a wireless card?

Without wireless you cannot achieve what I understand you want to achieve, i.e. log on to the internet anywhere in the house without a physical wired connection to the laptop.

Yes, Pete, the laptop has a wireless card but that is the only computer in the house. Can I connect the router to the ISP in another location without another computer there

Yes, but the router must also have wireless capability to transmit to the laptop.

I guess he missed your previous posts.

To your question, I think other guys above have already clarified it. Do you have other questions on it?

No Jason. The info was for my daughter in CA. Just got a new dell laptop to replace here desktop and I thought it would be a good idea to wi-fi her house but NOT to need another puter.

    thanks for the reply
