Quite often a dialog box appears in center of screen/desktop

    Header is Outlook Express
"to save Disk Space Windows can compress messages "this will take a few minutes "
    1. my C/hard drive is 70% empty/free, so why would i want to compress mesages!!
1a if i chose to compress them, how uncompress them, or do they automatically uncompress when i wish to read them???
    2. How stop thi dialog box(my preference until/unless someone explains) then it is still my option to compress or not compress

As far as I know, the only way to stop the message is to go ahead and let it compress.

The message comes up after OE has been closed 100 times....

Compress - if you delete a 100000000 old mails out of your Inbox, the file that holds the mail is Not reduced in size until the compress utility is run....Since there is a limit on the file size - doing the compression is a good thing.

Yes n No.....The files aren't compressed like a zipped file would be....They compress the blank/deleted mail out of the files and group the mail messages together. If anything, you mail folders will open a little faster after the compression.

Hi, you can get rid of that message by resetting the total in the store , it will come back after 80 to 100 messages but I just reset the total and it is OK. these is the instuctions.

    Close O/Express/
Start/ Run/ type in "regedit "( no italics)
navigate to key( double click each one)
" H Key- Current- User" / Identities / there is a long number double click on that / Software / Microsoft / Outlook Express /
5.0. In righthand pane / double click " Compact Check Count "
then change the number to "0 ".

Historically, there have been problems when compressing the files. It was when the user him/herself did it while online. If a message was incoming at the exact time when compressing was in action, the outcome could read "trouble ". It was recommended to disconnect from the web while doing the compressing. (Still a wise action to take if compressing manually.)

The automated compressing takes place when Outlook Express is closing down and "incoming" is not a possibility. In addition to that, a backup copy of each *.dbx file is created prior to compressing. These are sent directly to the Recycle Bin but are there until emptied by the user. If anything goes wrong, find the *.dbx files in the Recycle Bin, highlight them and choose "restore" and you will/should be back in business.

Once you have reopened OE after compressing and everything is there and works fine, the backup files only waste space. I think that's why they are sent directly to the Recycle Bin but I think Microsoft could have told the users that they get created. (Maybe MS did but I haven't seen that information anywhere easy to find.)

As has been pointed out, the messages are'nt compressed but the data base files (*.dbx) are "cleaned up ". When a message is deleted, only the reference to it is removed to, sort of, hide it but it is still in the data base. Compressing removes them from the data base file and frees the space.

    Christer

By the way, for someone not experienced, messing with the registry can have a higher fatality rate than letting OE compress ... ... !

    Annoying 'Windows" Message

    To Demon and Christer THANKS

Demon:I will print the directions and follow them to the letter..

To Christer, i do not want to compress the files.
There are no *dbx files in Recycle bin(i just looked)
I have changed things in Registry a number of times
(maybe 5) with clear, step by step directions..

I Prefer to get rid of 'annoying" message.I can't mess up in Registry with good directions, besides i have a good Win 98SE laptop that works.
I have hated XP since the day i bought it, still do, and will hate it next month also....

    By the way:

Do you have a specific reason? Has it gone wrong in the past?

Well, since you havent compressed, there shouldn't be any!

i don't want to compress because
1 i don't see the need. big deal there are 100 messages(someone said this pop up after 100 messages)
2 don't want to try because it may mess up ???
    3. had more than 100 messages in Win98SE 'puter and this NEVER showed up.
    4. i consider this an unnecessary annoyance, like the message
"This program has performed an illegal action and will shut down "
Well if IT didn't perform the illegal action>>>>>

Not 100 messages but 100 times Outlook Express has been opened and closed!

The backups in the Recycle Bin can be restored IF it gets messed up. (I suppose that millions of XP systems compress every day and if it was a problem, we would hear about it, don't you agree?

Different system > different "modus operandi ". (I don't remember if this new "modus operandi" was introduced in SP2 or a subsequent update but you don't need to go as far back as Win98.)

Now, where did the message highlighted (by me) in red come from? The first time you mention it! Are you sure that you have seen it in this context?

I think you missed the Yankee sarcasm. Above does not apply to "compress files message" i meant at times that shows up, but if the computer was very smart ,it would not perform an illegal action..

In My 98 puter which i used for 6 years, i am sure O.E. was opened more than 100 times. I have only had XP for 4+ years

    TO DEMON
I printed and followed your instructions, But when i get to 5.0 and click on it, the right pane has 3 columns
first column second column third column
    ab(default) REG_SZ (value not set)
ab is red in a box that is roughly the outline of Ohio on a map
i did not touch any of them...

So here you are nine days later.......Just say yes to the compress and be done with it:)

OE didn't do this back in the Win98 days...It's a new feature to assist you.

    Dear Steve:
9 or 90 or 900 days later I WILL NOT COMPRESS." "Surrender is not an option "
As i told someone else , i am a stubborn Yankee of Irish/German descent.

YOU STATED "OE didn't do this back in the Win98 days. "
That is why i love my 98SE Laptop(which was given to me after we switched and does DSL/Cable/Broadband) yes i have 3 'puters. While i am playing here, the Laptop is ready to receive any incoming...
The only reason i have this XP 'puter is because my 98SE desktop will only do dial-up..We had Bellsouth ISP for a while which has Dial-Up and DSL,but since the phone is in wife's name and she pays for it, she went to Comcast Cable which is alledgedly faster than DSL

.." "It's a new feature to assist you" " Who asked for it, not me..
    MIR11:) ;)
