    So.

As the title of this thread says " Beware of Windows. "

    Because ---

It can provide many hours of fun.
It can leave the kitchen sink full of dishes because once its Window is open it can close others.
It can help to get the mind off of other more serious matters. ( at least until it is closed )
It can help to keep me in contact with the rest of the world.

The more serous matter is awake and calling for help.
Windows Closed ( for now )
    Be back Later

Here's my couple of comments. I will try to be as neutral as possible, though I am a dyed-in-the-wool Windows (XP, *not* Vista) user.

A key statement made before is that Windows "must be all things to all people ". Personally, I think MS made Windows unreasonably complex, but what do I know ? I really wonder what any flavor of Linux would be if it tried to be "all things to all people ".

As for loading XP, the vast, vast majority of its users will never need or want to do this. Loading XP from an XP Install disc requires a little advanced knowledge. That's why all store-bought PCs have Windows preloaded. DUH ! Many users will be faced with restoring/recovering XP, though, and the PC manufacturers are extraordinarily deficient informing users how to do this and what to do when there are problems encountered.

If a person runs into errors installing XP from an Installation disc he is ******* unless he knows what the problems could be. But, isn't the very same true for Linux ? However, AFAIK, there are no (not many ?) preloaded Linux PCs for sale. A Linux user is *required* to understand the basics. At the moment Linux is only for "motivated learners" - it is still in the "serious hobby" phase of use for all those distros that are available.

When a Windows user runs into a problem (which is far too often, granted) at least there are many web resources he can turn to including the often cryptic and incomplete Microsoft KB articles. But, at least they are there. Perhaps this is because the Windows community is so large. There are many private, free web sites that offer tutorials and knowledge obout Windows. In general, the Windows support community is vast and very open. The Linux community has always seemed to be comparitively closed and the forums that I have come across seem to consist of conversations between 2 people rather than a true forum. Maybe I haven't explored enough...

Windows is re-opened and I am back looking thru it.

Can't be too awfully complex. This 75 year old can handle it.

I have yet to see a problem caused BY WINDOWS. The user trying IMPROPER use of same is a different story.

I must have had that knowledge then. 98 over top of 95. Xp over top of that. And all from the install disks But we may be talking different things here. You may mean a complete NEW install. I refer to all UPGRADEs.

I guess I didn't make myself clear. The inner workings of Windows is too complex - because MS wanted to make using it easy.

Yes, I meant installing XP from an XP Installation disc, not those horribly problem-ridden, for you wussy-types, gonna-mess-you-up-no-matter-what upgrades. Upgraded systems are always far more unstable than from-scratch installs.

I guess that I did not make myself clear either

If that was their intentions. they succeded and I appreciate it.

    Good Greif .
    Where did I go wrong ?? I am looking at my XP CD and I see;
    UPGRADE

    Microsoft
    Windows Xp
    Professional.

Do you still wish to says the upgrades are no good ?

    I disagree. I ain't had any problems.

I agree that some have had problems with any upgrades. But from EVERY one that I have had anything to do with they were ALL USER created. They DID NOT shut everything down or did not boot to the install disk.CD from a complete POWER OFF state.

If you do not power down and reboot ( to be more sure RAM is clear ) to the install/upgrqde disks ( or at least something other than the HD ) YES !! I AGREE you can/will have problems. Because INUSE files WILL NOT be overwritten properly.

I made that mistake ONCE. But once I realized my mistake and redid things from a power off state I AM HERE TALKING TO YOU via the Internet

    Again
When I find files in my Windows Folder dated WAY back in 1992 tells me that I must have done something right.

windows is a consumer based item.

    linux is not.

Only the hordes of rampant desire will see that windows is their gold, since it dances to the tune of money falling.

    All this makes me laugh!

After all, a computer and OS system is no smarter than the person pushing the buttons!! Some computers just can't seem to do anything right!!
