    Good Morning Folks.

I was not going to get into this any further but I changed my mind. And being that his is the FIRST real problem I have had IN YEARS I may need help. And I can not think of a better place to get it.
For the last few days only every once in awhile going from one place to another on this site it seems to hang up a bit. And is a bit jittery doing so.
Doing some checking I find that my C: drive is almost FULLY loaded. Only 1.213.730.808 bytes free.
In my C:/Windows\temp folder I see two Files that I DO NOT LIKE

    WGAEnt.log txt
    WGANotify Settings
Both at 6:21 AM today. ( when I turned this machine on )
Now if anyone can tell me that that is anything more tham Good Old Microsoft Windows ( be it Upgrade, downgrade, sidegrade or what ever ) doing its job and warning Old BillyBob that THE USER had better start doing some fixing OR ELSE.
But right now I may need to gamble AND PRAY that things hold together until I can get more Important things taken care of. Then I will see about getting a new HD and/or moving some things around to give the OS more room to work.

    Over and out.
    BillyBob

    PS.
I haved one both Spyware and Virus checks and nothing showed up.

    BB

    Hi BillyBob,

You should have started a new post; what you have done is called "Hijacking a thread ". Not considered good web forum etiquette. But, I think the original discussion has completely finished, so I will carry on.

What do you mean by "jittery" ? What is jittery, the display ?

Having only 1.2GB room free on the HDD is not critical at the moment, but you should work on getting a new drive now. With the large size and relatively low cost of drives today having plenty of room is easy. Any system should have at least 5GB of free space left on the system drive to give Windows "elbow room" to operate efficiently.

In fact, the size average disk drive sold today in new PCs is at least 160GB. This is so large that users should partition the room into up to 4 primary partition to make storing and then getting to files and folders easier. A new drive can be partitioned into volumes C:, D:, E: and F:. You can organize you saved files by general category on the various partitions.

Since you told me that you have an Installation CD, if/when you reinstall Windows you will have the choice of reinstalling the OS on C:, which will leave all your saved files on D: thru F: untouched. This system works out very well for me.

I not exactly sure I understand what your problem is.

I strongly recommend running CCleaner to you and anyone for that matter. It deletes all the trash that XP leaves behind. Whenever I run it on my business box (where a lot of surfing is done), it cleans 100-200MB of crud off my HDD.

It also includes a nice tool that lets you delete registry-based startup programs that you may not want.

If you're in the market for a new hard drive, take heart! I just got a 320GB-er for $75.

I think this has been settled to my satisfaction and my fears more or less confirmed.

    I need a new HD.

I do have the present one divided C-H: and do have very little other than the OS on C:
I was watching this morning and at about the same time the screen flickers the HD lights are going nuts. So it may all be tied together.

But again right now I have to do the best I can with what I got. Because installing a new HD and getting things redone requires STRICT attention. Which I may not be able to provide right now. It may not be a case of not knowing how, or that help is not available, but not daring to try it right now. Maybe later on when others things get fixed up.

Another wild thought that just crossed my mind.

We have been discussing the Ideas of a new HD. BUT ! will the rest of the system handle it ?

The SYSTEM is not just one thing. Several parts must work together. And sometimes new and old just do not get along.

I hear someone calling " Are you ready to go ? "

    Yup.

I may have found PART of the video flicker problem.

In between Doctor appointments I did some checking and found the TWO QUICKTIME programs were loading at startup. WHY ?? Don't ask. I can't answer.
Also a couple of HP Update programs were loading.
Also My Anti-Virus software in on C: ( when I thought it was on D: ) is just about to expire. So I will get a new version uninstall-cleanup and put the new on D:
Also I see a copule of programs that we never use anymore and can be disposed of.
This may not do away with the real need for a new HD but will help to ease things a bit untill we can get other things straightened out.
Could those Quicktime things been messing with things ?

Oh. Before I forget. We played out usual Tuesday evening golf game with the Friend In Canada and NEVER A FLICKER !!! ( I won the game and $555.000 )
I have been on here a couple of times earlier and now and see no problem either.
    Gotta go Help Nancy

May have found the answer to that.
A bit of Video flicker when online and jitteryness on this site came back. I had restarted due to making other changes and/or doing some house cleaning.
Checked and found that Quicktime was back in startup items. Removed it and all seems OK again.
I now believe it is caused by some Web site that I visit that is doing this. I believe there was one that did bring up a Message Window about Quicktime. But I may have just thought it meant USE quicktime. Not insert it into things.
There is also one the a Nieces Visits that may be doing it too. I gotta watch.
So it looks like this Ol' Man better be a bit more carefull.

Being chalenged to a came of Cribbage via the LAN.

Um, possibly. There was a size limitation at 128GB (not only in HDD sizes, but for Win XP pre-SP1). You/we would need to check the machine's specifications, you might then need to do a BIOS upgrade.

What about backing up your data to optical disk and  reformat. If my system ever happens to "fall over ", I view it as a new lease of life. You will need to set aside time from golf, cribbage, etc, etc and etc :D and locate your drivers, etc.

Other side, if a new HDD does not work, if you got a whole new machine, you could put the new HDD into an external USB case and use it for backup, transferring files, etc.

Clean up? The Temporary Internet Files folder is set by default at 10% of the drive size (Control Panel -> Internet Options ->Temporary Internet Files -> Settings button) I set it to 100Mb if I feel generous. Not all TIFs are deleted by System Cleanup, look in the folders under the IE5 folder. I just delete the folders under IE5. If you use another browser from IE it may have it's own TIF settings.

System Restore might use...errr... maybe a large percentage of the drive space. I just turned off System Restore on my non-OS drives (which don't need it anyway, from what I have read in the forums). You are knowledgeable enough not to need many Restore Points for your OS drive.

Have you checked in Add/Remove Programs for programs you may no longer use? Any game saves that you could trim down? What is in My Documents? Can you transfer (back-up) to optical disks?

    Good Morning Mattman

Thank you and all others VERY MUCH for your reply.

There are no if and or buts. I DO need a new machine. This one is AT least 12-15 years old and self built by Yours truley. And I think overall it has done EXTREMELY well.
Again. The old ( operator ) is not getting along with the new ( hardware/software )

HOLY Smokes. That word COMBINATION comes back again.

I have also been told that with the proper equipment AND OPERATOR of same this HD could be copied to a new ONE. But agian even if that could be done would the existing system be suficient. my anser is NO !!!

As far as your other Ideas.
I have cleaned up SR. TMP files. I do keep backups.
As I also mentioned in another reply. As soon as I get my new Anti-Virus software It will be on D: instead of C:
But right now I can not get too deep into PCs as long as I have something. And something is better than notihing. As far as Cribbage, Golf etc. I/we need that too. It helps to keep me/us going.

So does being able to use this BBS.

So for now I will do the best I can to keep this old thing going.

On my second computer running Windows 95, I held out for as long as I could before buying a new HDD. I found it would crash between 96 and 98 MB of free-space, I cruised along at 100-120 MB for a long time, but I needed to watch the free-space reading.

Your 1.2GB of free-space, with a more modern OS, should keep you going fine if you keep it around that level ( you might be able to squeeze it a little harder). If you get any messages about space, it's time to start trimming again (best not to get too close though).

If you want to keep it chugging along, you will just need to be diligent about the space.

You probably built that computer when I was only learning about them. They are making them a lot more "hassle free" nowadays, but you need to get parts that are compatible.

You seem to be considering options. I think that is the goal of our opinions.
    :)

    LOL I am STILL learning.

I do believe you have hit the nail SQUARLEY on the head.

And I need to but those options in order of importance.
A $100 bills says you know exactly what and understand what I mean.

    Thank YOU

At times while here I have heard my Dad in the background saying " Be honest. PLay fair. Ask questions. Answer questions honestly. and YOU WILL get what you need
    Gotta go help someone.
