    Results....

Well, it's definitely S3 mode that is causing Vista to crash. I changed the BIOS to only allow S1 mode and no crashes. I then changed it to AUTO and let Vista decide how to sleep. Vista chose S3 mode and then crashes resumed. Again, the same hardware does not cause a crash in XP. When I chose Hibernate rather than Sleep, Vista also crashed (Hibernate looks like S3 mode)

Another annoyance with Vista is that when it does come out of hibernation/sleep mode without crashing it takes a long time to "wake up" and often it doesn't find my wireless network and I have to reboot. XP, on the otherhand, wakes right up from S3 sleep with the wireless network on line right away. Bottom line, for me at least, is that XP just works better on my rig so I am going to switch back.

Thanks again for everyone's help and input. :D

    That's OK Brett.

Most current motherboards are being released with labels like "Vista ready ". If yours is an older model it may need upgrading using a BIOS upgrade. If you want to try running Vista again at some stage, check for recent BIOS upgrade releases for your motherboard model. There should be a description of what "enhancements" they make.

Thanks Matt, I think I will save Vista for my next rig, by then I'm sure there will be a Service Pack or 2 out and it will probably run as smooth as good 'ol Win98! :D
