I'm trying to help my friend, who is with Windows XP, but this question concerns my Vista, as well.
In XP, in Windows Explorer, when you go Tools>File Types, there is a button "New ", where you can add a new file type, if it doesn't show up in general list of files.
He has some files ( ".svg "), which open with Adobe Illustrator Artwork 13.0.
However svg file type is now listed in Windows types of files, so he is trying to add it through "New" button.
    Adding procedure goes fine, but:
    - svg file won't show up in Windows file list
    - if he double click on svg file, it won't open (Windows doesn't see associated program)
    - if he goes "Open with..." this one time, it'll open with Adobe Illustrator Artwork 13.0, but even if he put a checkmark in "Always open with... ", next time he double click on svg file, it won't open.

    So, couple of questions here:
    1. What could be a problem?
    2. Is it any way to make a new registry entry, establishing new type of file - svg.
    3. In Vista, there is no "New" button when you go Start>Default Programs>Associate a file type or protocol with a program. How then, can you create a new file type in Vista, or is it possible?

    Thanks, as always.

Thanks for your reply, but my question was little bit different.
How do I add a file type, which is not listed in Windows file list, to that list?

For XP ........ with the file types dialog open, select the new svg extension and click the Advanced button below. Next to Actions pane, click New. For the Action, type open, then click Browse. Navigate to and select the program executable for Adobe Illustrator Artwork 13.0 (you can get it's name/path from the properties of the Start Menu>All Programs entry). Click OK, OK and OK.

Can't help you with Vista at the moment :(

Yeah, as for XP, that problem has been solved, as I posted above.
    I'm curious about Vista.

I'm pretty sure, there is some registry hack, since there is a list of files extensions in registry, but I don't want to mess up my brand new computer.

OK Go to the file you wish to associate and right click on it and select Properties, then select Change and pic the program of your choice. Once you do this it will show up in the File Association list. :)

The method you describe SHOULD work, works for me even (with different programs though), so i guess it's just stupid Windows again.

I have had .svg associated with Opera and Inkscape and now Firefox without any trouble.

Sorry i couldn't help any further.
Maybe there's something about it on http://svg.startpagina.nl , but as it's most likely a Windows problem, i guess not.

Re-read my reply above. That's exactly what help said! If you don't have a file to click on you can jusr temporarily re-name one ro click on.
