First of all I've been reading posts for two days now and I have seen others with similar problems but have not found a working fix.

What had happened is I did a Repair/Install of Win XP Pro SP1. Once I was on the last round of updates prior to the install of SP2.

The machine booted up past the MS Welcome Screen and went blank with an over sized and movable pointer arrow.

Reading more I created a slipstream SP2 boot disk. I went through the disk selected the "R" choice to repair an installation. The machine saved and loaded all files and then went to reboot, it rebooted to the WIN XP welcome screen then went right back to the blank screen with over sized pointer.

I also tried booting into safe mode and safe mode loads with each corner of the screen displaying "Safe Mode" however the screen remains blank with the over sized pointer.

I slaved the HD and booted into an XP Home install on another drive I can view all my files and everything seems in tact. I ran a scan disk and defrag and that does not help my problem.

I really want to have the ability to boot into this drive even more importantly I'd love to find a working fix as I saw this problem described but no working fix. I really thought the slipstream SP2 would do the trick but I am right back where I started!

Any information would greatly be appreciated. I also checked the MS boards and have come across a similar problem but it is related to video drivers which don't explain the error repeating itself in safe mode or the Install/Repair.

    Thanks in advance,

    Dino

Not being able to work in Safe Mode is a bad sign.

I would expect that there is a problem with the graphics (oversized cursor??) .

If all else fails, you could install a fresh version of Windows to where it is now. You would need to reinstall all your programs/applications or have them sitting there taking up space.

I keep my data on a separate drive/partition (which I back up to optical disks).

My suggestion, find a good way to back up your data, then you don't need to rely on the OS or the mechanical functioning of the HDD (if that fails you need big money to recover the data).

Find a way to recover from any circumstance.

    what a pain.....!

Thanks for the info.... I actually contacted MS who didn't have an answer and blamed some other software messing there's up! I did do a parallel install of the OS and am now trying to take ownership of all my other files and hopefully this will keep my loss's to a minimum.... A large pain in the rear!

Already purchased an external drive so I don't have to do this again....
