After typing a long document then saving it into a folder on the drive, closing the application, word did not save document. Why? There are two documents named the same however, one has the ~ preceeding the name. What does this mean?

The ~ file is Word's temporary file for the document - if you re-open Word does it offer Autorecovery?

Tools > Options > Save autorecover info every .... mins. I can't remember if this is checked by default or not.

Out of habit I hit the Save icon every few minutes :)

Nobody can guess why Word failed to save your document I'm afraid - I can only reiterate the advice I gave for the future ....

    Ensure Autorecovery is checked.

Hit the Save icon every few minutes or so.

Before giving up completely, open Word, go to File>Open.

Then, in the "Files of type" drop-down list, click once to select "All files." See if your document appears.

It may be the missing document got saved in a format other than .doc. When .doc is selected in the drop-down list, the file list window will display only .doc files.
