    Please contact your system administrator.

    The problem is, I am the administrator on my standalone XP Pro system.

    Everything is up to date, and I've scanned with everything from McAfee to Spyware Doctor and can't find any intrusion, and this seems like something viral. I looked in the registry (I do have access via regedit) but don't see anything obvious, but my knowledge of network security at the registry level is pretty non-existent.

    This -condition- pretty well makes my computer feel like it's a temp worker's box in a Fortune 500 company; I can't access any settings of any kind, no control panel -can't even adjust the date?

    Anyone know what has hijacked my system?

    ABQjoe - Welcome to the Board :)

    If this is a very recent problem it is possible that your PC has been compromised .......

    Please download HijackThis through Quicklinks in my signature and save it to a folder on your hard drive, say C:\HJT - not to the Desktop or a temporary location. When entries are fixed with HJT a backup is made to the folder from which HJT is run and this must be in a permanent location.

    Open the folder in which you placed HJT and double click on hijackthis.exe and select Scan and save a log file - this will be saved in the folder from which you ran HJT. Post the log here (copy/paste into post).

    I will then move your thread to the Removing Spyware & Viruses forum.

    HijackThis - No effect

    Thanks for your response, Pete. I ran HijackThis and found 13 items I couldn't identify, but deleting them (and rebooting) had no effect on my problem.

    One (possibly) critical item I left out, was that I became aware of this situation when SMART sensed a drive failure in my RAID 0+1.

    I thought that perhaps my NVidia sw had disabled everything until the drive was replaced. When the condition persisted after the RAID was back in good health, I knew there was another issue.

    Thanks for your suggestion though...

    Unwise - we have members on the Board trained in the analysis of HJT logs and other malware, some of which hides itself from HJT.

    Your call, but I would restore the items you deleted and let our people have a look.

    Thanks Pete, duly noted.

    I ran all my critical sw after the deletions and found no problems. I'm fairly adept; though I hate this routine with a passion now, I was a MCSE/A+/ACE consultant for 12 years -5 years removed.

    I prefer graphic design, thanks.

    Problems like this remind me of why I quit computers. I just want to be a lame user who's completely oblivious of the inner workings of my machine.
