I suspect that I need to replace my cmos battery, since the bios won't hold the time. :( My questions are: 1) what else might be affected if I choose not to do this (the computer is close to 5 years old, so I am reluctant) and 2) would the shareware programs that synchronize your time to the internet work to set the time automatically?

#1 - if you don't change the time AND install any demo type software with an expiration time period - they'll quit working when you do change the time.

Programs like Quickbooks can and will choke if you leave the time way back when and create a transactions...

    #2 Yes untill you reboot...

The battery only cost about 2 to 3 dollars and are generally pretty easy to replace.

Thanks. Any suggestions as to the best place to purchase it? I hate calling Dell for parts because they want to know everything but my shoe size.
