    Hi all,

i seek a way to configure a p2p lan (xp pro) computer so that every time the other computers try to access certain shared folder it requests the username and password for validating the permissions, so only specific network users can access the folder.
I need a password prompt, because some other person could sit by permited comp and get into protected one.

I tried to create a user on the XP machine, gave that user appropriate password, and then assigned rights to that user for the folder i want to secure.

However i haven't succeeded to get password prompt by accessing that folder.
What will happen depends on whether i have a user with the same username/password on accessing machine:
    1) if so, system allows access without password prompt
    2) if not, system denies access without password prompt

But i really need that password prompt. :(

Could someone give me precise instruction on how to achieve this?

    Thanks a lot

    p.s.
i think the hack might be in the content of shared folder's permited objects list ('group or user names') beside mentioned user.

    edit:SFS is disabled of course.

The first thing to do is to check that 'simple file sharing' is turned off. To do this:
    • Open Windows Explorer
    • Select 'Folder Options' from the Tools menu
    • Click on the View tab
    • Scroll to the bottom of the list of Advanced Settings and remove the tick against 'Use simple file sharing (Recommended)'

You should then be able to control access to the shared folders more precisely via the Permissions options in the folder properties:
    • Right click on the folder to be shared, and select properties
    • Select the Sharing tab
    • Click on the Permissions button
    • Remove the Everyone object. Add users and set their permissions as required

If you are using NTFS on the hard disk partition hosting the folder, you will also have a security tab. Make sure that the folder and file security settings match those of the share permissions. That is, that users who have rights to use the share, also have rights to access the files exposed by the share.

Reggie, as i mentioned, i turned SFS off, and successfully set permisions via "Sharing" & "Security" tabs, so just the appropriate users can access that folder. That's done.
But i don't want those users can get in automatically, but with password prompt.

I don't think you can. Windows will try to be too helpful. The only thing I can think of is to give the users a different user name to access the folder. Say HarryA to log on, and HAston to access the share.

Could you please explain that HarryA and HAston stuff in more detail?

Do you mean i should have say 'HarryA' user on a remote machine, and 'HAston' on the local one?
Which one should i add in permited objects list (Sharing or Security tab?) of protected folder?

According to my experience, in any way that would produce an access rejection for 'HarryA'.

Btw, what do you think about this discussion?
(i don't know at the moment whether the Guest account is disabled or not /office network/.)

    Thanks a lot :)
