Resolved Outlook Express opens many copies when clicking e-mail hotlink

I'm using Outlook Express with Windows XP pro. About a month ago it started behaving strangely. If I click on an e-mail link in another document, or a web site, there is a pause for a few seconds, then it starts opening many, many copies of Outlook Express, almost like it is in some type of programming loop.

When this happens, I start closing them as fast as I can, and usually can get ahead of the opening of new windows. Once I kill the last open one, it doesn't make any more.

This behavior happens whether or not Outlook Express was open when I hit the e-mail link.

Any suggestions or prior experience on this?
