i have inherited an older laptop from daughter, she got it in 2001, Toshiba satellite 1800-5203, i was planning to wipe the HD and run linux on it, except i think that the DVD is not functioning. the hardware profile sees it, but when i put a disc in, i get a "not ready/ retry cancel" dialog box, it doesn't matter what type of disc i use.
is there a diagnostic i could run to see if it is the drive9the trouble shooter says the device is working properly. so why won't it read a disc?

      :(

Should try a cleaning kit on the drive. Six years worth of dust and crud could be the culprit.

It looks like ADVAPI32.DLL file is missing, or corrupted. Which OS do you have on that laptop?

ADVAPI32.DLL is MS file used by number of applications, like MS Office, IE, etc.

Check the link, I provided, and see what version of ADVAPI32.DLL you need.
If you have Win 98 CD, you don't have to do it, you may just extract it from there. If you don't have a CD, check needed version, and I'm pretty sure you'll find some download on the internet.

    Hi,
Try booting to a bootable CD, like the Windows CD. Of course, if that works, the problem is in the operating system, if it does not work, (check the boot sequence in the BIOS/startup configuration settings), it would appear that the drive no longer works.

You can download your version of ADVAPI32.DLL from HERE.
Download it to a know location on your computer, and don't touch it, for now.

Open Windows Explorer, navigate to C:\Windows\System, and see, if you have ADVAPI32.DLL file there.

    A. If you have it:
    1. Click Start
    2. Click Shutdown
    3. Choose the option to restart the computer into a MS-DOS prompt.
    4. Click OK.

Your computer will restart to a black screen with C:\Windows prompt displayed.
    Using your keyboard type in:
    ren C:\windows\system\advapi32.dll advapi32.old (<---notice spaces)
    Hit Enter.
    Type in:
    exit
It'll bring you back to Windows.
Now, find your downloaded file, copy, and paste it to C:\windows\system\ directory, using Windows Explorer.

    B. If you don't have ADVAPI32.DLL file in C:\windows\system\ directory, simply find your downloaded file, copy, and paste it to C:\windows\system\ directory, using Windows Explorer.

Make sure, you print out my post, since in case "A ", you won't have an access to Windows.
