Desktop blinks when copying files, and other times

Hi. I'm using XPsp2 fully updated, a P2.4 processor with 1 Gig ram, Nvidia 5200 graphics.

The desktop icons blink (or flash) when I am copying files (even when copying files from/to drives that are not my main C: drive). It looks like the desktop is refreshing for each file copied, but that's just my guess. They also flash when I'm using MSconfig to change startup settings.

    This behaviour just started recently.

I saw one article here addressing this, so I tried the "Shelliconcache" fix, and that didn't help. I cleared IE cache, and my swap file is system-managed and has plenty of room on its disk.

Any suggestions, please? Many thanks, - J

Jongira - Welcome to the Board :)

This is a longish shot, but try increasing the icon cache size - the attached .reg file adds options for cache size to Tools > Folder Options > View in Windows Explorer - screenshot.

NB to attach the file I have to give it the .txt attribute - change that to .reg on download.

    Hi PeteC.

Thanks for the welcome, and the quick response. I'm glad that you overlooked the 'I tried the "Shelliconcache" fix' line in my post, for indeed that seemed to be where the problem was... I also cleared out (deleted) the icon cache from my profile directory ( /Documents and Settings/<<Username>>/Local Settings/Application Data/IconCache.db).

I enjoy the .reg file you included -- I appreciate having that setting accessible now.

    Thanks so much, Jongira
