    Hi everyone:

I have had this little icon in my system tray for more than a week now and when I roll my mouse over it, it says: Downloading updates 0%.

    I tried to reach
    update.microsoft.com/microsoftupdate/v6/default.aspx?ln=en-us
manually, but not only it won't open the page, but it freezes IE and the only way I can unfreeze it is by End task in task manager.

Any idea of what's going on?

    Thanks

maybe you could try disabling automatic updates reastart your computer and then re-enable automatic updates?

you said ie freezes when you try to update... If you have another browser such as firefox try this... http://windowsupdate.62nds.com/

    hope this helps

You disable Automatic updates from Control Panel > System. On the Automatic Updates tab, select Turn off Automatic Updates, click Apply. Reboot your computer and now select Automatic to re-enable Automatic Updates.

Hi Arie, thanks for looking at my problem.

On my Control Panel > System, there is no Automatic Updates tab, only General, Network Identification, Hardware, User profiles and Advanced.

So I don't where else to go. I just tried to open MS updates, but it froze IE again.

I found that I have Automatic Updates under Control Panel > Automatic Updates, but when I tried to open it, it did the same thing, it didn't open and froze IE.

When you run winver (Start > Run & type winver, then press OK), what's the Windows Version & build number listed?

In Control Panel, there is Automatic Updates ICON. Double click on it.

Sorry, I was thinking it was WinXP, not Win2K.

Post the last 1/3rd of the WindowsUpdate.log.

To open this log, go to Start > Run and type

    %windir%/WindowsUpdate.log

    and press OK.

Arie, even 1/3 of the file is 600kb. Do you really want me to post that big of a text?

Post anything that seems to be from the same date/time.

No problem for the size, as long as it fits here... the limit is 35K char. per post.

Arie, I thought I had posted the (partial) WindowsUpdate.log, but it may have been rejected because of its size or whatever; anyway, it's not there.

However, in the meantime, a lady at Windows Update customer service helped me figure it out, it had to do with the BITS key being corrupted. She had me download an updated version (KB842773), and it works now.

    Thanks for your help though.
