Is there any comparison among different brand of security software? I found it quite annoying when they work at the background, eat up my CPU power, RAM or scanning my disks when I need the full power from my computer.

    Try this: http://www.av-comparatives.org/seiten/framecheck2d.js

And yes... it is annoying. You have a few alternatives:

    - get a Mac. My son just purchased an i-Mac and he does not bother with most of this security software. I know.... that will probably change. But in truth, it will never be as security prone as a PC.

    - get a suite. Again, there are many who do not like suites and claim that they are more resource intensive but that has not been my experience with BitDefender's security suite. It's light, does the job and I don't have to worry about updating a raft of programs.

    - don't get caught up in the security paranoia. I say this because some people cannot seem to get enough reassurance that they are safe and they have programs fighting programs fighting programs in their quest to be 100% safe at all times. The fact is, there is NO guarantee short of pulling the power cord on your computer. Be prudent in your surfing and e-mail habits. Watch where you go, what you open, what you download. If it's free it's not always a "good deal" so be careful. Recognize that some security programs fight with others so more is not always better.

About the only 'comparisons' you're going to find are the ones you find in tech mags or tech sites and most of those are off the mark by one degree or another.

You first need to decide what type of protection you need. Is the machine shared by others? Do they have good security knowledge and are they savvy enough to stay away from known malicious sites and so forth?

If not, can they be educated to stay out of these 'red' zones?

Some security software offer different levels of protection and you need to decide which are important to you.

My best advice is to try several different ones to see which is best suited for your system. Keeping in mind that what works well on one system, may not work so well on another.

And unless you're running at least 1GIG of RAM, stay away from any system suite out there. All of them require quite a bit of juice. And my own opinions of them are they are not up to the task because they typically just don't do all things as well as stand alone applications.

And as to specific applications, that is a question which will yield as many different names as people who reply, as each have their own experiences with different brands.
