Typically, or perhaps frequently, a PC has one hard drive and one CD (or DVD) drive, and the hard drive is connected to the primary controller and the CD drive is connected to the secondary controller.

I want to add a second hard drive, but the way my PC is configured hardware-wise, connecting the second hard to the primary controller would be quite difficult. It might be [physically] possible, though, to connect it to the secondary controller (along with the CD/DVD drive). Would there be problems, performance-wise or any other-wise, with doing that?

    Thanks.

I would not see a problem there - as far as Windows is concerned it is just another drive and both controllers are equal AFAIK.

Keep the OS drive on EIDE 1.

Only time it'll be a wee bit slower is when you copy files off the cd the 2nd drive. Other then that, should have any problems.

A lot of systems I have built recently, and worked on, have an 80 lead cable for the primary IDE and a 40 lead cable for the secondary IDE. The 80 lead cable is for HDD connection, the 40 lead for optical drives. If you run a HDD on a 40 lead cable, it will only run at ATA 66, so I suggest doing a quick check of the cabling itself.
