    Great!

Now, check the ntuser.dat file in the kids folder again. What's the icon? If you right click on it, do you have options to Open and Edit? If you select either one, does it open notepad? Can you send it to a zipped folder now?

If you can't zip it, reset the kids account to a limited account and try again.

    Let me know!

See if you have the following registry key.

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\CLASSES\DAT_auto_file

Just to be sure, the account you are attemping this on, C:\Documents and Settings\1 (kids account), is a different account than the one you are logged on to right now? Did you by chance leave the kids account logged on, eg; use fast user switching to go from that account to yours, or otherwise leave a program running on that account?

Is this XP Home or Pro?

Please reboot to safe mode and logon to the Administrator account, then try to zip the ntuser.dat file in C:\Documents and Settings\1
If successful, move the zip file to C:, then email it to me when back in normal mode.

Gotta sign off for the night ........... will check in later.

Jae, that account is badly whacked. Not only were the permissions for the entire hive whacked (which is why the reg files wouldn't work), there's so much information missing from it I'm surprized you can even logon to the account. I can rebuild a hive for you (almost done now) that would make the account at least 98% functional, but I'm not sure what would happen when trying to run installed programs.

If you open regedit from your account and look at the keys under HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software, you will see subkeys that reference many of the installed programs, among others. The hive you sent me should have almost the same set of keys, but it has only 2 subkeys; Mediamatics and Microsoft. If you expand the Microsoft key, you will find another 40 or so subkeys. This hive has 4. Expand Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion and you'll find another approximately 20 subkeys. This one has 4. Collapse everything back up to where only HKEY_CURRENT_USER is expanded. You should see between 10~20 subkeys. This hive has 5.

My recommendation is to just delete that account and create a new one for the kids. Let us know if you have problems with it as well.

    Hey Dave,
I deleted the kids original account because it was not functioning properly and created a new one, the one we were working on.
I tried again to delete that account and create another. Upon logging on to that account the same error came up as before when I created the account that I just deleted, "Windows cannot load user profile but has logged you on with a default profile for system, detail cannot find speciefied path" and is gives you about 30 seconds to accept. Same errors on this account as before no desktop and probably a bunch of other things, does this mean anything to you ?
Will the back up disks do anything, or should I just give up and run with my account ? No worries if so..
    Cheers Jae

    Hi Jae,

Check out this MS article, despite it applying to 2000.

    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/246936

Did you by chance hit the spacebar once after typing the new username, and/or hit backspace at the end?

    Hi Dave,
No I'm pretty sure I did neither, but to check I created another making sure not to space or backspace, still the same problems
    Cheers

Are you giving the new account a different name?

Did you try the resolution from the article upon logon/error message?

Backup disks? Are you referring to the discs that came with the computer? Are they Operating System discs or Recovery discs? Recovery discs will take your computer back to the state it was in from the factory, meaning all programs installed since then, all documents, pictures, etc will be gone. The same would happen with a clean install using an Operating System disc too. I doubt a repair install would be of any help.

I'm not sure if it can be done, but try creating a new account from the Admin account in safe mode. Not sure it will make any difference even if it can be done, but it's worth a shot.

I wouldn't toss any discs in unless you're ready to start back at square 1. I'll continue to try finding a fix though, if you want to just leave things as they are with your account. We can also try an edited by me hive file for the new account too if you want.

Dude , I'm happy to continue the battle as long as you are up for it ! It's just I feel like a bit of pain and I see there is a quick fix in the recovery disks.
I don't think I have alot to lose if I do a recovery as I have most of my stuff saved on CDs and can always re install the few programmes that I use, my only worry will be my Norton anti virus.
But as I said it's up to you..I'm keen, no worries if your exhausted, algood

I'm not exhausted, but I'm out of answers at the moment for a proper fix. Rolling back to day one would certainly take care of any other possible system corruption, provided it's not something attributed to hardware. Which makes me curious ......... have a look in the Device Manager for anything with errors. Make sure to click View>Show hidden Devices too.

No help there. If you want, send me the ntuser.dat from the latest account created and I'll work it over. If you send me the one from your account too (you'd have to get it while logged on to another account), I might be able to use it to build the installed software list too. Also need you to check, if outlook Express is to be used on the new account, if there is a folder in C:\Documents and Settings\newuseraccount\Local Settings\Application Data (Local Settings is a hidden folder) with a name that is an enclosed string of numbers like the following.
    {7223F0A6-6578-11D6-A77B-00B0D0142080}
    I will need that number.

You might have to get the Dad ntuser.dat file from the Admin account in safe mode. Definitely email them ........ they would be near complete gibberish if you managed to post it here any way. ;)

Oh, just got the Fulas file!
