    Hey all

    Would anyone be kind enough to point to help or explain how one goes about turning off master browsing in windows XP? My network is sometimes slow and I want to make my linux samba server the master browser (becuase its on 24/7).

    thanks in advance :)

    Try this...

    open the registry and navigate to;

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Browser\Parameters\MaintainServerList

    Change the MaintainServerList value to "No ".

    Thanks for the reply. I did what you said and couldn't notice any difference but I also forced my Samba server to be the master browser and this does seem to have had an effect on overall performance.

    Thanks again!

    The reg tweak will prevent future running of "computer browser" service but I'm not sure if it would stop a running service. May need a reboot to do that.

    Probably safer for most to open Services (either right-click My Computer and select Services or control panel~administrative tools~services) and stop Computer Browser service. Then go into properties and Disable the service.

    And I really wish someone could explain to me why the same service is named Browser in 2K and Computer Browser in XP.

    It's called computer browser in my Windows 2000. Or did you just get them around the wrong way? :p

    Calculus - oops. My bad. It is called Computer Browser on NT4/2K as well as XP if you look in services on the PC.

    I nearly always use a tool called Hyena for dealing with services since I'm looking at, start/stopping, etc. on a fairly large number of servers. There it is identified as Browser which is the name of the service rather than Computer Browser which is the usual description.

    Glad you caught it.
