I some how lost the volume on my computer. I had a Audigy 2 zs gamer sound card and could not get the volume any louder then a whisper. It used to work well. I upgraded to a AMD 4200x2 dual chip and could not get the Audigy to get louder. I took it out and even the on board ac-97 stock sound is a whisper. I have slid every slider to loud, the speaker knob is set to max, the keyboard volume to max....what am I missing? Any help appreciated.

Possible a problem with the speakers. Attach them to a different computer to test volume output.
If speakers work fine, I would be suspicious of the audio card.
Per your driver updates, have you tried removing/deleting audio drivers while in Safe Mode?
