Not sure if this is right forum, but asking this question on behalf of a friend. My friend recommended Ccleaner download for someone and subsequentely something happened to his hard drive. He insists it was caused by Ccleaner. Could this have done something to hard drive or is this chap wrong. An answer would be much appreciated.

    regards

    Joan

Physically damage a hard drive -> Nope

Destroy the information stored on a hard drive -> You bet.

Thanks for reply Pete. Another question if I may. Can the information lost be restored and if so, how would he go about it.

    regards

I've never used CCleaner but know it has a built in "restore" function. If that was turned on it should help.

PeteC et al are of course correct. The hard drive can be restored usually by deleting all partitions and making new ones, then formatting. It's possible that a low level format has to be done first - just writing bits to it to eliminate any spurious data.

Of course, coincidences happen, and it's possible that the hardware drive died; wonder why ccleaner was used in the first place - dying drive?

And with over 13,000 posts, the other Staff members (at least Steve R Jones) have probably already determined how to read PeteC's mind anyway and can speak for him. ;)

EDIT: BTW, since both PeteC and Joan are in the UK, the people in that country might have ESP skills the rest of us are not aware of. ;)
