I have just installed an HP Laserjet 1018. When I run out of paper, the printer sends my computer a message about it, which, after reloading the paper tray, I have to click so that the print job can resume. In XP, the message displays immediately in my monitor, allowing me to easily click on Retry, once I have reloaded the paper. In Vista, this involves clicking on an Interactive Services window, which blacks out my display for a couple of seconds, before taking me to the window I need to click on to run my print job.

Is there any way I can disable this Interactive Services feature, or at least, get it to stop blacking out my display?

This service can be safely disabled. You can do it from Windows, but I use very nice, small, and free program called ServiWin
After installing it, right click on a service, then click "Change Startup Type ", and click "Disable ".
    In Windows go Start>Control Panel>Administrative Tools>Services
Right click on a service, click Properties, and change its status there.

Thanks, broni, that "feature" was annoying me, too. The next time I boot into Vista (means: when I'm sorta caught up on actual work!) I'm killing off that service for good. Starting with UAC and moving along, Vista sure seems intent on protecting me from myself!

Thanks, Broni. I've disabled it already and we'll see if I get that message again, the next time my printer runs out of paper.
