Get the "NTLDR is missing" error

    An afterthought - you could disconnect all peripherals and remove all add-in cards except the graphics card - unless the graphics are on board, and give the repair one more shot.

    I decided to keep trying with the repair install. (All my data is backed up, so I have nothing to lose.)

    Now I consistently get the following error:

    "The file 'asms' on Windows XP Home Edition CD-ROM is needed.

    Type the path where the file is located, and then click OK. "

    I found a thread where Arie refers to this Microsoft support article:

    But the solution they recommend there does not do anything. They have me delete an Upperfilter and Lowerfilter key, neither of which are there. I think that is a different problem that I do not have.

    Guess I'll keep trying for a while.

    Well, I finally gave up, after running out of new ideas to try. Wiped the hard drive and started over.
