Prior to install of new PCI card, do the following ...
From Device manager, uninstall old / any sound card drivers.
Go into BIOS and terminate / disable on board sound card.
Now install new sound card per provided instructions.

    Hi,
Just before you do that, check that there are no listings in Add or Remove Programs in Control Panel. On this computer I have a listing for Realtek Audio (drivers), on another there is a listing for C-media 3D Audio. If you uninstall the audio from Add/Remove Programs, it will uninstall any associated software and hardware (there may be more than one device associated with the soundcard in Device Manager).

Since you are a beginner :), let us know if you need help with the BIOS.

Edit: BTW, what would be very helpful is if you could find the specifications for your computer and add them into your signature (check DennisL's). Even if the problem did not relate directly to your hardware, that reference will prove handy, at the least. Basic information like the system/motherboard information would be excellent.

im not sure how to disable it in the bios, but i did remove the old soundcard info before installing the new card. so now i have no sound at all, not even the garbled burping sounds i was getting with the old onboard one.

i dont have all the specs. my comps kinda a mutant. i took the dvd, cdrw, and hard drive from my old emachine that the power source and button broke on and put it into my husbands acer case using his mother board and power source. i got a mini upgrade doing this cause his processor is better and i combined our memmory ram card things to give us a gig of ram in it. i also put in my nvidia gforce video card that is working just fine.

whats making this all the more difficult is not having the internet at home anymore. i have to go to my brother inlaws or my mothers to get online and taken info back and forth using a zipdrive.

tonight ill try to get all the respective specs off the two cases for the mutant computer to add to my profile here to help. i dont know how well ill be able to do that though cause i dont think the acer still has its stickers on the front.

btw, the soundcare is an inland Thundersound soundcard 4.1 wave stock no. 58017 if that helps at all.

could my entire problem be the bios thingy? id need step by step instructions on that cause i have no idea how to do that.

thank you guys, i really appreciate the help. :)

    Hello Lucky Kitten,

For finding the specs of your system, download System Information for Widows http://www.gtopala.com/

The program is small - 1.3 MB's. It's an execute and run, no need to install. Put it into a folder of it's own in C:\Program Files and click the execute.

    Look under Hardware > Devices.

I think we need to find out more about the Mutant Ninja Computer :)

If you have Windows XP on one computer/motherboard and change the harddrive into another computer (read motherboard), it may work, if the hardware is similar. If not, you need to run a reinstall of Windows. Did you run a reinstall? Even after the reinstall you will need to run the driver installation CD for the new motherboard. Even though hardware may be "working ", it may be running on standard drivers that Windows can use if it does not have the manufacturer's drivers available [it will only run very ordinarily].

You have done well rebuilding the computer. Making the hardware work well will depend on drivers.

Since I am wondering, if you did not reformat the harddrive and just switched it over to the new motherboard, could there be any software left over from the Emachines computer?

I suppose I need to ask. How did you get the harddrive from the Emachines computer to work on the new motherboard? Was it:
    A) you just connected it
    B) you connected it and then ran a reinstallation of Windows
    C) you reformatted the HDD and installed a new version of Windows (if so, what version?...the Emachines, the Acer or a another version).

To get the onboard sound working you will need to use the drivers that came on the drivers CD that came with that particular motherboard (or from the downloads at their website).

Removing any previous drivers or software may "unblock" why you cannot get the new hardware to work.

there is the problem with the acer case and its motherboard, no disks came with it, so no drivers for its stuff. the hardware installing thingy says its just a generic unknown multi-something or another for sound. i cant remember the exact words. im posting from my mother inlaws today.

when i made the mutant, i just plugged in the parts and pushed power, they all worked. i didnt reformat anything. the soundcard wasnt working properly before hand either and we just hadnt replaced it cause we werent using the acer computer. the only thing i had to reinstall drivers for was the videocard for it to work properly after the switch in cases.

im gonna try that system info thing to find out what i can about my computer. maybe it find something out. but i know vertually nothing about the acer other than i hated how it ran and thats why i never used it.

the right clicking on mycomputer/properties/device manager, i used that to uninstall the onboard soundcards drivers. at least thats what the computer said it was doing.

if i take the acer harddrive and make it a slave drive, would it mayber have the info on it to the onboard soundcard to aid in removal? or would that make things worse? it would mean removing one of my other drives to do it. there isnt enough plugs on the cord from the powersource to have two harddrives and both my dvd and cdrw hooked up.

trying to think outside the box to maybe pull it inside out and solve the problem. thanks guys. you are great.

If you can find the serial number on the case, you can find what hardware it has here:
    https://secure3.tx.acer.com/FindSystem/FindSystem.aspx?title=Information About Your System
    That is the US website.
    Drivers:
    http://www.acerpanam.com/flex/acerdrivers/bin/drivers.html?CFID=3836185&CFTOKEN=16592467

It very likely has an Intel chipset. Install the chipset update first. It looks like the audio drivers are mainly Realtek or Intel. Try getting the onboard audio working. As I said, make sure there is no software listed in Add or Remove Programs for the Thunderbird or the Emachine before you install the Acer drivers. Take the Thunderbird card out if it is still in the computer.

You are connecting the speakers to the correct output jack? It is pushed in all the way? After you install the drivers there should be an icon in the notification tray for the audio manager.

Try that, if you cannot get the onboard sound working by using the correct drivers, then we could help you with disabling the onboard sound and installing the Thunderbird card.

I would avoid jumping from one audio system to another (to another). If there is a problem to begin with, it can make it worse.

awesome. the realtek driver was the one. now the old soundcard works. was able to install the new soundcard but i cant use it even though it says its enabled.

    i get this message:

This device cannot start. (Code 10)

Click Troubleshoot to start the troubleshooter for this device.

without the internet i cant troubleshoot. im just very confused what to do next now.

The old one works? Unless you have a wiz-bang speaker system, I'd stick with that. Stereo is stereo on any soundcard (2 channel), it is the speakers that will make the difference. If you have, say, a 7.1 channel speaker system and the onboard soundcard will only run 5.1 channel I might consider changing. What channel system does the Thunderbird card run?

[Channels...5.1 is two front speakers, two rear speakers, a centre and a bass speaker].
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/5.1

Look in the notification tray (near the clock). There should now be a Realtek icon there. Right-click on the icon and in the selections you will see the capabilities of the onboard soundcard (mine can do stereo, quadraphonic, 5.1 and 7.1 speaker systems). Onboard audio can be just as good as any add-in card nowadays.

Don't try running the Thunderbird at the same time you have the onboard (Realtek) running. If you want to run the Thunderbird instead of the onboard sound, you will need to uninstall the drivers and software for the Realtek, go into the BIOS settings and disable the onboard audio, then, maybe(?), get the Thunderbird going. Depending on the capabilities of the "soundcards" and unless you have a set of high quality speakers (see above), you should consider whether it would be worth the trouble.

If you are just going to run a set of desktop speakers, the change would not be worth the trouble.
