Do I need DVD burning software?

Dumb question, but....

I have a HP xw8400 workstation with a DVD RW drive....I thought I could just drag and drop data onto this drive and have it write the files, but I'm getting an error message. I tried both -R and +R DVD's. Are these types of drives designed to just open in "My Computer" and burn data, or do I need software such as Roxio to accomplish this task?

Not that I am very experienced with the Windows burner Check that the files are not "waiting" to be burnt to the disk. Put a blank disk in the drive, double-click the drive in My Computer. See if it says there are files waiting to be burnt to disk.

To my knowledge, DVD burning software is NOT native to XP.
Since you have a DVD burner on your computer, check in programs for Nero or Roxio.
Bucket loads of Free DVD Burning software available. CDBurnerXP Pro and DeepBurner are both rated excellent.
