My computer keeps telling me that my USB external drive will work faster if connected to the USB2 outlets on my computer but as far as i know they are all USB2 enabled so changing outlets makes no difference to the speeds i get.
I have fitted a Belkin 8 port USB2 card to give me more outlets but it makes no difference if i use those or one of the original ports.
any help or advice would be welcome.

    Hi alboy,

Did you try uninstalling the usb root hubs and have XP re detect them on reboot?

Look in Device Manager->USB Controllers->Do you see "Enhanced" or mention of USB2?

If not, you'll need to look on the mobo makers web site..

What Operating System are you using and do you have ALL the updates?

The Enhanced controllers are USB 2 - I suggest you uninstall USB every component on that screenshot - not just the hubs and reboot for a reinstall.

The onboard USB 2.0 controller is now showing as VIA. Does USB 2.0 work now using the motherboard connectors?

I would suggest you get the updated chipset drivers from VIA
    www.viaarena.com

After you update the chipset drivers, try uninstalling the "standard" enhanced controller again, or, rerun the driver disk for the USB card.

I was unable to download the latest driver as the software available seems to only allow a check and not a download.
I did a rough check of time to transfer 10gb of data from the computer hard drive to the usb hard drive and it took about 5min, would this speed be acceptable for a usb2 transfer ?.

many thanks for all your help.

It appears you may have a "branded" computer (special drivers). Otherwise, I don't see why you can't install the update.

The USB speed, it may be relative :) , do you get the balloon in the Notification Tray saying the speed can be increased?

    Your transfer speed is ~ 33Mb/s - definitely USB 2 :) On USB 1 it would take a week :D 4.

I have checked all the USB drivers i now have installed using the scan on www.driveragent.com, and other than a fix from microsoft that i have now installed it tells me that all my drivers are up to date and the error message that i was getting about speed has not appeared yet so i will see how it goes .
again many thanks to all for your help.
