when i attach a flash drive to my computer, windows recognizes the item in device manager. However, the flash drive does not display in windows explorer. I can not access the device - copy files to it etc. My camera can not be accessed by explorer. At one time this was not a problem.

Hi ronblock. You will go crazy trying to read those MS notes and still will not be able to fix the problem.

Try uninstalling the USB drivers and then let XP reinstall them on the next startup:

Control Panel > System > Hardware tab > Device Manager button

Click the plus sign to the left of Universal Serial Bus controllers. For each entry listed underneath right-click the entry and select Uninstall. Restart your PC.

thanks for your suggestion, Steve Jones. However, it does not work. None of the suggestions even pertain to the question asked.

the challange is that the items are showing in device manager, but not in explorer. I can't reach any of my external storage devices hooked up by USB. I can reach my printer and PDA on USB, but nothing else. It seems that if the device is software driven, it is accessable. My external zip drive is not accessable either.

This has me stumped. I tried to repair the windows install, but that also did not work. :(

    solution found

I opened the computer management consol and had it rescan all the drives one at a time. It found each drive and am now able to access them. It appears that Microsoft is aware of the problem and it only occurs in all versions of XP.

you can find the solution at:
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/297694/en-us

(obviously copy and paste it into the address bar)
