My main HD is set at the 12% max to collect SR points. I just noticed my external HD, used just for backup storage, is also set at 12% (by XP's default). Is that 12% really being set aside on my backup drive and thus I'm losing ordinary storage capacity? Certainly I can't do a SR from an external drive. Shouldn't I just turn off SR on the external? [i.e., put a check mark on "Turn off SR on this Drive"]

    Hi chrisw,

No, it's not being set aside. It means the max size that the SystemVolumeInformation file, SR's file, can reach is 12% of the partition. This is providing there is room for it. If not, it'll just take whatever room there is available and delete the oldest restore points accordingly.

I agree that normally you shouldn't have SR turned on for any partition other than the one the OS resides on.

Charles...thanks, after I turned SR off on my external, I noticed that "free space" hadn't changed...so nothing was being stored, reinforcing what you said. But I never saw an SVI file on my external, and I've unchecked the hiding of all folders/files. BTW, I notice you and Steve are "staff "....staff for what? Just curious, no ulterior motive...you guys are helpful.
