I Can't See my NAS over the network

Hello, I am having some networking problems and am hoping someone here can help. I just purchased a Maxtor Shared Storage II NAS device and am having trouble seeing it from any of the computers on my network.

My file server is running Windows 2000 SP4 and my nodes are a mix of W2K, XP Pro, and XP Media Center PCs. I do NOT use DHCP. Rather my gateway, server, PCs, and NAS all have a fixed static IP assigned to them. I am also running the NetBEUI protocol. This network has evolved over the years and the NetBEUI is a legacy protocol.

When I installed the NAS I installed software on my server and followed the instructions to set up an admin account with a password and several other accounts with passwords. When I am logged into my server I can see the NAS device the same way as the server's own hard drives. When I try to access the NAS from a PC client I run into all kinds of problems. I can ping the NAS device from the PC. I can try to map the NAS as a network drive. When I try mapping there is a 30 second pause before a screen pops up and asks me for a username and password. No matter what username and password I try, all of them are rejected. I know they are correct because I set them up and they work from my server.

Could this have something to do with NetBEUI? Do I need NetBEUI for any reason?

The only idea I have is that the Maxtor drive came with software that I installed on my server to manage the device. Maybe this needs to be installed on every PC? That doesn't make sense to me - shouldn't a networked device be visible to anyone on the LAN who has the username and password without the need for additional software? I am going to try using this software next after I post this question.

Below is my HiJack this log. In addition to "the invisible NAS" problem, please let me know if you see any other problems. This computer has a nasty habit of hanging when I right click in Windows Explorer. I am running SpyBot and AdAware as well as Zone Alarm. I also have a NetScreen hardware firewall.

Thanks in advance for all your help
! I have been pulling my hair out on this one.

I doubt NetBEUI has anything to do with this problem. However, I also doubt it is doing anything on your network that TCP/IP could not manager, and therefore is just adding extra traffic. NetBEUI is a very inefficient network protocol suite, relying totally on broadcasts.

I think the main problem with your Maxtor, is that it doesn't know about your Active Directory and therefore cannot use user account credentials hosted there. That means it will rely on its own user account administration and therefore you have two log ons (one at system start and one when you access the external drive).

    You therefore have two options:
    1. Search the documentation that came with the drive, for information on how to set it up to talk to Active Directory (that is, if this option is available - it might not be. I can't find a copy of the manual on the Maxtor site, so can't tell you one way or the other).
    2. You turn off permissions on the Maxtor unit and give everyone full access (or every access a guest access with full rights
Obviously, option 1 would be the preferred options as it will let you control access. Personally, if the hard drive won't talk to AD, I'd move it to a backup only role and replace it in the general access roll with an NAS unit that will talk to AD.

Update - it is now working

    Hi Reggie,

Thank you for helping me out with this. I just finished discussing my problem with Maxtor support (through their live support chat feature that worked very well).

First, the NAS does not recognize or use AD. :( I need to use its built in features to restrict access to folder. I will try this out later tonight when I have some free time.

Now the good news. We discovered that the problem was caused by Zone Alarm! When I disabled ZA I was able to map a drive to the NAS. After further questions I was told that the NAS device uses TCP as well ports 1671 1672 for UDP. I can configure ZoneAlarm to open these two ports. Now everything seems to be working.

Are there any risks involved in opening ports 1671 and 1672?

Also, my computer still acts sluggish in Windows Explorer. By chance did you see anything suspicious in my HiJack This log?

    Thanks again!
    Chip

If you are inside a local network separated from the network by at least NAT on your router, opening the two ports is likely to be low risk. How are you securing your internet connection?

I'm not the person to ask about HijackThis logs. You'd be better off starting a new post in the "Removing Spyware & Viruses" forum, and posting your log there.

However, I wouldn't go down that route yet if your only symptom is slow Windows Explorer; there are a number of simpler causes of that:
    • Large files - especially zip files - in your root. XP will search ahead into zip files, and if there is a large zip file in c:\, searching that will slow Explorer a lot when it first opens.
    • Disconnected mapped drives. If you have mapped a drive that is no longer accessible - common for laptop users who use their laptops on multiple networks. When you open Explorer, it will try to look ahead in all mapped drives. If Explorer has difficulty opening a mapped drive, it will halt until it has had a good attempt to connect.
    • Disconnected printers. Similar to disconnected map drives, though less pervasive.
    • DNS resolution issues. If DNS isn't set up properly on a Windows Active Directory network, it will cause all sorts of performance issues such as slow Windows Explorer. See this posting.
Those are common causes I see fairly regularly. I'm sure there are others.
