Hello, when I do my clean install of XP PRO I unplug my printer and my Web Cam. Should I leave my Wireless Router hooked up or just connect my PC through my Cable Modem. Its probably a stupid question but I had a horrible time hooking up to the Internet last time I did my clean install.
    Thanks for any help...

    Disconnect all "extras" first.

Hi PAULDEP. It doesn't really matter whether or not the router stays connected to the PC.

When you install XP, the installer may or may not have the correct driver for the networking port. If it does, then XP will automatically try to register XP. This is good and saves you a step.

You didn't say whether you have a generic XP Install disc or a Restore disc from the PC manufacturer. If it's a Restore operation that you are doing then the disc will have all the drivers it needs for that particular PC. If it's a generic XP Install disc then it's likely that XP won't have the right driver for the networking chip. In this case be sure to have all the drivers burned on (a) CD(s) ahead of time.

Be sure to unplug all USB devices before reinstalling XP.

Thank you WinCrazy,, I have a generic CD with XP Pro on it. I have a Dell so after the re-install of OS I load all my Drivers. So maybe it will be better to disconnect the router and follow the setup directions from the start with my Router..Again thank you WinCrazy for your help.

It's perfectly ok to leave the router connected to the pc dutring the install. If xp does not have the necessary drivers then it will skip the networking setup part of the installation. Load the chipset firmware first after a clean install, then the video & other drivers.

The advantage of leaving router connected IF xp has the needed net drivers is that you are immune to code red & other net viruses immediately. It's unsafe to have the modem directly connected to comp during the install if xp does have the net drivers.

Good point TonyT,,,I usually disconnect my Cable Modem power source anyway. Then I install Anti-Virus software and Firewall before I plug the Modem back in..
thanks for that info though because its a good reminder and advice to anyone reading this post..
