Yesterday when I got attachments in e-mail through OE 6.0 they started going to a my documents folder but would not open. They go to Documents and Settings\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files. Embarrassingly, I have never noticed where they were going before so maybe this is where, but seems wrong to me.

What folder are attachments in e-mail supposed to go and how is that controlled. I have searched help in IE and OE but seem to find no references to this. I feel really stupid having to ask abvout this were but I am truly baffled.

    Your help appreciated.

The files "should" go where ever YOU tell em to go.

Right click on the attachment and select "save as. "

I do not get a save as option. Prior to this problem all I needed to do was click on the attachment icon and it would open in whatever was appropriate window or folder. I did have the save as option at that point. Thanks.

    Check in OE ....

    Tools > Options > Security .....

Is 'Do not allow attachments to be saved or opened ...' checked? - if so uncheck it.

Also uncheck 'Block images and other external content .....' if checked.

Your av should cover allowing the above.

And when you do the save as option you should be able to save em where ever you want.

Pete C - neither are checked

Steve R Jones - That's part of the problem, no option given.

    Thanks to you both.

So you get an attachment - Example Word.doc file

You double click on the attachment within the email and Word opens.

You then click on FILE->SAVE AS

You don't get ALL the usual options of using the drop down or the places icons on the left side of the screen?

I get the Outlook Express local folders i.e. inbox, outbox, etc.

When I click on the paper clip icon for attachment I get the name of the attachment and under that a line and under that Save Attachment. All
attachments now seem to be with .eml extension.

Using Save Attachment I get a dialog box offering me the browse option to any existing folder on my machine. I choose a folder with name My Archives and save to that, then in that folder and click on the named Attachment
I get the following response - Page cannot be displayed
Open the res://C:\WINDOWS\system32\shdoclc.dll/syntax.htm#mhtml:file:// home page, and then look for links to the information you want.

I right click on the named attachment in My Archives folder and choose the open with option of Outlook express the extension is changed to .zmc and when I left click on that I get the html version of the attachment which is literally gibberish. I can right click on the .zmc ext and get the warning from Zone Alarm "do you really want to open this?" and I can then open it. This is, you must admit a very hard way to open an attachment.

I do not know if all this makes any sense to anyone but this is the best description of what is happening I can give.

I did a system restore and now things seem normal. I sent two e-mails, 1 via Yahoo and one via OE. Both were pictures with .jpeg extensions.

When received both had picture included in body of e-mail plus when I clicked on the attachment icon on each, each opened in Windows Picture and Fax Viewer as they should.

Maybe the problem is resolved, I'll just have to get folks to resend the ones received since this prioblem started.

    Thanks to all.
