how much free space is showing on your C drive total?
try using disk clean up to remove recovery images, and to clear up temporary files. The recovery images are snapshots (volume shadow copy sessions) to allow you to recover in case of file corruption. Under normal circumstances you only need 1, but XP will typically keep 10 or 15% of your disk space for multiple versions.
