    Hi:

Since we just got started using Windows Vista we are posting here.

Have a program that was working only a couple of days ago.

Now it stopped and we get this message:

    MTVDM.EXE has stopped working.

When we go on line seeking information there "seems" to be plenty
of answers. However all the leads go to very expensive programs
we must purchase to fix the problem.

We are on a fixed income budget and cannot afford even a
    cheap program !

Windows Vista was supposed to be good. Now almost every program
we run seems to have that same message " XXX has stopped working.
And they want to fix our regestery, whatever that is, for a price !

We are 86 years old and we don't have time to learn all that jargon.

Can anyone please help me get things working again.

Those programs were spreadsheets and contain my finance data
and my budget data for all of 2007. And they have worked good up
until today. (Could this be a 911 joke ?)

Thanks, we are in real need of help here.

It states we have Memory(RAM) 1015 MB

    Hope this will help.

    Thanks

That should be enough. Are these older programs that you're trying to run?

What antivirus program do you have installed?

How did you get to Vista? Did you upgrade from Windows XP? If yes, you should seriously consider a clean install instead...

Which program? Ntvdm.exe is a 16-bit VM... i.e. running 16-bit (OLD!) programs on your 32-bit OS.

Who wants to fix your registry??

Older programs and all that !

    Hi:

Some are new and one is real old, "Microsoft Works For Windows version 2.0a "
purchased in 1987. But it is the best little program Microsoft ever made.
    Simple and easy to operate.

As to Vista. We purchased the computer with Windows Vista. Do not have a cd or dvd and I wouldn't know how to install it anyway.

However, we retired for the night and whamo, the programs are working ok today !

Thanks, I guess it was that 16 vrs 32 whatever !

Vista sometimes stumbles trying to run 16 bit applications in full screen mode. If you continue having problems with them, you may need to create shortcuts to the programs, then in the shortcut properties, set it to run in a window rather than full screen.

Glad it's working for you today. :)

    Mystery solved - I think !

    Hi:

Thanks for all the help folks.

Now here is what I have observed.

    1. I boot up and everything works - including that "Works" program.

    2. I turn off the monitor and go have dinner or some other event.
Vista sort of goes to sleep while I'm gone.

    3. When we return it is necessary to tap the on switch and Vista wakes
up. And that program does not work and others including scanner.

    4. Have to shut down and start again. Then it works until Vista sleeps !

As to who wants to fix my registry. Try it. Type mtvdm.exe in the search field.
You'll get nothing telling you what it is, but plenty of offers to do a free scan
And they find hundreds of errors. And to fix, it's $69.95 and on and on !

    Again thanks

There are some fixes for Vista's sleep/hibernation problems (hardware related though), see: Cumulative update rollup for Windows Vista
